Recensie: The Blues Band – So Long

Niets wees er in 1978 op dat The Blues Band het zo lang zou volhouden. Zanger en harmonicablazer Paul Jones wilde een bluesband oprichten. Hij belde Tom McGuinness, die hij nog kende toen beiden in Manfred Mann speelden. Die haalde weer buurman, toenmalige zwager en tweede helft van het succesvolle McGuinness-Flint Hughie Flint (drums) erbij. Gitarist Dave Kelly en bassist Gary Fletcher sloten zich erbij aan en The Blues Band was een feit. In 1980 verscheen het eerste album, Rob Townsend verving Hughie Flint, de band stopte in 1983 en begon drie jaar later opnieuw. Met een behoorlijke regelmaat verschenen albums.

Na ruim veertig jaar vinden de leden van de band het wel genoeg. Ze zijn allemaal dik over de zeventig en vinden het tijd om een stapje terug te gaan doen. Nog een afscheidstournee door het Verenigd Koninkrijk en een (voorlopig) laatste album en dan zit het erop. Het betreffende album met als titel “So Long” is onlangs verschenen met zestien nummers. Hiervan zijn er dertien door de individuele leden van de band zelf geschreven. De andere drie zijn covers van Skip James, Eric Bibb en de Bee Gees. Naast de vijf heren dragen ook oude vrienden als Albert Lee, Zoot Money, Bob Hall en Ben Waters een steentje bij. Het album begint met de door Kelly gezongen Skip James cover “Hard Times Killing Floor”. Diens stem klinkt nog steeds sterk en soulvol, wat vooral te horen is in de verrassende Bee Gees-cover “To Love Somebody” en zijn eigen “Them Ol’ Crossroads Blues” en “Ti Fi Une Grande Dame Maintenant (Big Girl)” met een prachtige bijdrage van stergitarist Albert Lee. Daarnaast is Paul Jones zowel vocaal als op harmonica ook uitstekend op dreef met diens eigen “Sweet Sweet Girl” en “Hoggin”, dat hij samen met zijn vrouw Fiona Hendley heeft geschreven, en ook Eric Bibbs “Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag You Down”. Andere nummers die wat mij betreft een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn de door Tom McGuinness geschreven en gezongen “Midnight Bus” en “Bring On The Blues” en Gary Fletchers “Don’t Let It Be You”.

Een meer dan uitstekend album en een waardig afscheid van deze band. Hoewel, afscheid? Ik heb begrepen dat er tijdens de tournee opnamen zijn gemaakt, dus een laatste live-album en/of dvd zou nog tot de mogelijkheden behoren. En de heren Jones en McGuinness zetten in ieder geval hun werk met hun andere band The Manfreds voort. En ook de anderen zijn het spelen nog niet beu. Dus wie weet.

There was no indication in 1978 that The Blues Band would last that long. Singer and harmonica player Paul Jones wanted to start a blues band. He called Tom McGuinness, who he knew from when both played in Manfred Mann. Latter again brought in neighbor, then brother-in-law and second half of the successful McGuinness-Flint Hughie Flint (drums). Guitarist Dave Kelly and bassist Gary Fletcher joined in and The Blues Band was born. In 1980 the first album was released, Rob Townsend replaced Hughie Flint, the band disbanded in 1983 and started again three years later. Albums were released regularly.

After more than forty years, the members of the band think it's enough. They are all well over seventy years old and think it's time to take a step back. A farewell tour through the United Kingdom and a (for now) last album and then it's over. The album in question entitled “So Long” has recently been released with sixteen songs. Of these, thirteen were written by the band's individual members. The other three are covers of Skip James, Eric Bibb and the Bee Gees. In addition to the five guys, old friends such as Albert Lee, Zoot Money, Bob Hall and Ben Waters also contribute. The album starts with the Skip James cover “Hard Times Killing Floor” sung by Kelly. His voice still sounds strong and soulful, which can especially be heard in the surprising Bee Gees cover “To Love Somebody” and his own “Them Ol' Crossroads Blues” and “Ti Fi Une Grande Dame Maintenant (Big Girl)” with a wonderful contribution by star guitarist Albert Lee. In addition, Paul Jones is also on top vocally and on harmonica with his own “Sweet Sweet Girl” and “Hoggin”, which he co-wrote with his wife Fiona Hendley, as well as Eric Bibb’s “Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag You”. Down”. Other songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion are the Tom McGuinness written and sung “Midnight Bus” and “Bring On The Blues” and Gary Fletcher's “Don't Let It Be You”. A more than excellent album and a worthy goodbye to this band. Although, goodbye? I understand that recordings were made during the tour, so a final live album and/or DVD would still be possible. And Messrs Jones and McGuinness in any case continue their work with their other band The Manfreds. And the others aren't tired of playing either. So who knows.
