Recensie: Malone Sibun – Ashes To Dust (EP)

 Een jaar of drie geleden besloten de in Detroit geboren en nu in Londen woonachtige Marcus Malone en de Brit Innes Sibun eens de koppen bij elkaar te steken en een samenwerking aan te gaan. Dit resulteerde in uiterst succesvolle optredens en een album. Voor wie nog niet weten over wie ik het hier heb. Marcus Malone is een in Detroit geboren zanger en gitarist, die blues, soul en Detroit rock combineert tot een verpletterende rockstijl. Gitarist Innes Sibun komt uit het Britse Bath, staat bekend als een van de hardwerkendste (en meest zwetende) muzikanten op het podium, en heeft naast een eigen solocarrière samengewerkt met Robert Plant, Buddy Guy en Sari Schorr, om er maar een paar te noemen.

Twee jaar geleden verscheen hun eerste album samen, getiteld “Come Together”. Dit werd alom goed ontvangen en toen de heren klaar waren om te gaan toeren sloeg de bekende pandemie toe en werd alles stop gezet. De gedwongen pauze noopte hen creatief met de situatie om te gaan, dat wil onder meer zeggen dat de nummers door de muzikanten apart in verschillende studio’s zijn opgenomen. Het resultaat is nu verschenen in de vorm van de EP, getiteld “Ashes To Dust” met vier nummers, waarvan drie eigen composities. Begeleid worden het duo door Kevin O’Rourke (drums), Roger Inniss (bas) en Tim Blackmore en Moz Gamble op toetsen. Muzikaal is het gewoon stevige bluesrock, zoals we dat van Malone en Sibun gewend zijn. De eerste twee nummers, “Makin’ It” en “Ashes To Dust” gaan stevig stampend van start en Willie Dixons “Evil”, de enige cover, doet daar nog een stapje bovenop. Afgesloten wordt de EP met “Restless Heart”, een rustige countrybluesballad, geleid door de dobro van Sibun en gedragen door het orgelspel van Moz Gamble.

Een fraai tussendoortje. Ik kan niet wachten op de volgende volwaardige cd. Grote klasse.

About three years ago, Marcus Malone, born in Detroit and now living in London, and Englishman Innes Sibun decided to get together and start a collaboration. This resulted in extremely successful performances and an album. For those who don't know who I'm talking about here. Marcus Malone is a Detroit-born singer and guitarist, who blends blues, soul and Detroit rock into a crushing rock style. Bath-born guitarist Innes Sibun is known as one of the hardest-working (and sweatiest) musicians on stage, and has collaborated with Robert Plant, Buddy Guy and Sari Schorr in addition to having a solo career of his own.  

Two years ago they released their first album together entitled “Come Together”. This was widely received and when the guys were ready to go on tour, the well-known pandemic hit and everything was halted. The forced break required to deal creatively with the situation, which means, among other things, that the songs were recorded by the musicians separately in different studios. The result has now been released in the form of an EP entitled “Ashes To Dust” with four songs, three of which are own compositions. The duo are accompanied by Kevin O'Rourke (drums), Roger Inniss (bass) and Tim Blackmore and Moz Gamble on keys. Musically it is just solid blues rock, as we are used to from Malone and Sibun. The first two tracks, "Makin' It" and "Ashes To Dust" kick off with a bang and Willie Dixon's "Evil", the only cover, takes it one step further. The EP is closed with “Restless Heart”, a calm country blues ballad, led by Sibun's dobro and supported by Moz Gamble's organ playing. A nice in-between. I can't wait for the next full CD. Great stuff.
