Recensie: Micki Free – Turquoise Blue

Micki Free is een gelauwerde Amerikaanse gitarist, die al zo’n kleine veertig jaar meedraait in de muziekscene. Hij is afstammeling van de Cherokee en Comanche native americans en Ierse immigranten. Hij werd op 20 mei 1955 geboren in West-Texas en verhuisde met zijn ouders mee naar Duitsland, waar zijn vader sergeant was in het Amerikaanse leger. Als 12-jarige ziet hij daar Jimi Hendrix optreden en wist meteen wat hij de rest van zijn leven wilde doen.

Met zijn familie verhuisde hij naar Illinois, waar hij zijn eerste band, Smokehouse, oprichtte. Toen de band in het voorprogramma stond van Kiss maakte hij zo’n indruk dat Gene Simmons hem als zijn manager onder zijn hoede naam. Het begin van een roemrijke carrière, dat leidde tot solowerk en samenwerking met mensen als Santana, Billy Gibbons en Gary Clark Jr. Als deel van de succesvolle Shalamar won hij o.m. een Grammy voor zijn compositie die werd gebruikt in Beverly Hills Cop.

Met “Turquoise Blue” is onlangs een soloalbum verschenen met daarop dertien nummers, waarvan twaalf eigen composities. De enige cover is de Hendrix versie van “All Along The Watchtower”. Hij krijgt de ondersteuning van zijn vrienden Gary Clark Jr., Steve Stevens, Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram en Cindy Blackman Santana. 

Het album ontstond tijdens de eerste uitbraak van Covid-19 en de vrije tijd, die ontstond door het advies thuis te blijven, gaf Free de gelegenheid om zijn gevoelens tijdens die periode op muziek te zetten. Het resultaat is een ijzersterk album met een dozijn eigen nummers, die vertellen over hoe hij deze afgelopen jaren heeft beleefd. Het begint meteen met de opener “Bye 2020”, waarin hij vertelt over het ziek worden, de massale sterfte en ook over het ‘fake news’. Andere nummers die wat mij betreft een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn het stevige “World On Fire”, dat wordt gezongen door Andy Vergas (leadzanger bij Santana), de ballad “Heavy Mercy” en het soulvolle duet “Come Home Big Mama”. Een meer dan uitstekend album.

Micki Free is an acclaimed American guitarist, who has been in the music scene for about forty years. He is descendant of the Cherokee and Comanche Native Americans and Irish immigrants. He gets the support of his friends Gary Clark Jr., Steve Stevens, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram and Cindy Blackman Santana. The album was created during the first outbreak of Covid-19 and the free time that came with the advice to stay at home gave Free the opportunity to put his feelings to music during that period. The result is a very strong album with a dozen of his own songs, which tell about how he experienced these past years. It starts with the opener "Bye 2020", in which he talks about getting sick, the mass death and also about the 'fake news'. Other songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion are the heavy “World On Fire”, sung by Andy Vergas (lead singer with Santana), the ballad “Heavy Mercy” and the soulful duet “Come Home Big Mama”. A more than excellent album.
