Danny Bryant – The Rage To Survive

Iemand als Danny Bryant hoeft niet meer te worden geïntroduceerd. Sinds zijn debuutalbum in 2002 hoort hij bij de Europese top in het bluesrockgenre. Ook hij was – net als zoveel andere artiesten – door de pandemie gekluisterd aan huis. Zijn vorige album dateert uit 2019 en al zo’n anderhalf jaar hebben we hem niet meer op de podia gezien. Gelukkig gaat alles nu weer veranderen.
De frustratie die het gedwongen thuisblijven heeft veroorzaakt heeft Bryant verwoord in zijn nieuwe album “The Rage To Survive”. De tien nummers op het album zijn door hem zelf geschreven. Hij wordt begeleid door Dave Raeburn (drums), Paul Mallstratt (bas), Stevie Watts (toetsen), David Madison (trompet, flugelhorn) en Lauren Young (saxofoon). Productie was in handen van Ian Dowling, die bij Bryans vorige album ook aan de knoppen heeft gestaan. Zoals de titel al min of meer verraadt is het geen vrolijk album geworden. Er zit veel woede en verdriet in zijn teksten en de uitlaat voor een bluesman als Danny Bryant is zijn muziek. Het titelnummer, waarmee het album opent, geeft dit meteen weer. Woede over verlies, niet bij de pakken neerzitten en doorgaan, is de boodschap. Zeer indrukwekkend is “Invisible Me”, dat begint met een sombere trompet. De zeer ingetogen zang neemt de luisteraar mee in de wanhopige eenzaamheid van de hoofdpersoon. Erg mooi is ook de afsluiter “Westport” over die ene ware liefde die hem steeds ontvlucht. Zoals gezegd, geen vrolijk album, wel erg goed.

Someone like Danny Bryant no longer needs to be introduced. Since his debut album in 2002 he belongs to the European top in the blues rock genre. He too – like so many other artists – was confined to home by the pandemic. His previous album dates from 2019 and we haven't seen him on stage for about a year and a half. Fortunately, everything is going to change now.
Bryant expressed the frustration caused by being forced to stay at home on his new album “The Rage To Survive”. The ten songs on the album are written by himself. He is accompanied by Dave Raeburn (drums), Paul Mallstratt (bass), Stevie Watts (keyboards), David Madison (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Lauren Young (saxophone). Production was in the hands of Ian Dowling, who also did Bryan's previous album. As the title more or less reveals, it has not turned out to be a happy album. There is a lot of anger and sadness in his lyrics and the outlet for a bluesman like Danny Bryant is his music. The title track, which opens the album, immediately reflects this. Anger about loss, not giving up and keep going, is the message. Very impressive is “Invisible Me”, which starts with a sombre trumpet. The very subdued vocals take the listener into the desperate loneliness of the main character. Also very beautiful is the closing track “Westport” about that one true love that always flees from him. As said, not a happy album, but very good.
