Recensie: Robert Jon & The Wreck – Shine A Light On Me Brother

Al vanaf hun oprichting in 2011 bestookt Robert Jon & The Wreck hun publiek met zekere regelmaat met ep’s en cd’s. Daarnaast toeren zij over de hele wereld en hebben in hun bestaan een solide reputatie weten op te bouwen. De band is afkomstig uit Orange County, Californië en bestaat uit Robert Jon Burrison (zang, gitaar), Andrew Espantman (drums), Steve Maggiora (keyboards), Henry James Schneekluth (gitaar) en Warren Murrel (bas). In de loop van hun bestaan hebben ze allerlei nominaties en prijzen in de wacht weten te slepen en stonden zijn in het voorprogramma van artiesten als Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Eric Gales en Walter Trout om er maar enkele te noemen.

Op hun nieuwe album “Shine A Light On Me Brother” staan tien door de band zelfgeschreven of meegeschreven nummers. En net als met hun vorige, zeer goed ontvangen cd “Last Light On The Highway” toont de band ook hier weer waarom zij tot de absolute top horen van de huidige Southern Rock. Van de opener, de rockende gospel “Shine A Light On Me Brother” tot het vlotte “Radio”, waarmee de cd wordt afgesloten wordt de luisteraar meegenomen op een prachtige reis door het muzikale landschap van de zuidelijke staten van de VS. We krijgen een fraaie combinatie van blues, rock, gospel en soul te horen. Daarbij hebben de heren in hun teksten ook nog iets te vertellen. Het titelnummer verhaalt over de ellende die het gevolg waren van de pandemie, in “Everyday” komt het verlangen naar voren om weer op te treden, vrienden te ontmoeten en “Brother” gaat over het ondersteunen van vrienden, die geestelijk in de knoop zitten. Mijn persoonlijke favorieten zijn “Desert Sun” met fraaie samenzang en prachtige slidewerk, en het gevoelige “Brother”. Een meer dan uitstekend album, aanrader.

Ever since their inception in 2011, Robert Jon & The Wreck has regularly bombarded their audience with EPs and CDs. Over the course of their existence, they have garnered numerous nominations and awards and have supported artists such as Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Eric Gales and Walter Trout to name a few.

 

Their new album “Shine A Light On Me Brother” contains ten songs written or co-written by the band. And just like with their previous, very well received CD “Last Light On The Highway” the band shows again why they belong to the absolute top of the current Southern Rock. From the opener, the rocking gospel “Shine A Light On Me Brother” to the jumpy “Radio”, which closes the CD, the listener is taken on a beautiful journey through the musical landscape of the southern states of the US. We get to hear a beautiful combination of blues, rock, gospel and soul. The guys also have something to say in their lyrics. The title track tells of the misery caused by the pandemic, "Everyday" expresses the desire to perform again, meet friends and "Brother" is about supporting friends who are mentally in trouble. My personal favorites are “Desert Sun” with beautiful harmony vocals and beautiful slide work, and the sensitive “Brother”. A more than excellent album, highly recommended.
