De Greyhounds is een uit Austin, Texas afkomstig duo, dat bestaat uit zanger en toetsenist Anthony Farrell en zanger en gitarist Andrew Trube. Het stel werkt al samen sinds 1999 en hebben sinds hun debuutalbum uit 2004 zojuist hun achtste plaat uitgebracht. Hun nummers zijn onder meer vertolkt door artiesten als Susan Tedeschi en Derek Trucks. Naast hun eigen carrière als Greyhounds maakten de heren een tijdlang deel uit van JJ Grey & Mofro.
Met “Primates” is het achtste album van de heren verschenen. Naast hen is alleen noch drummer en percussionist John Speice te horen. In het verleden verzorgden Farrell en Trube zelf de productie van hun albums. Om hun vleugels wat meer uit te slaan hebben zij voor deze taak Steve Berlin aangetrokken, die deel uitmaakt van Los Lobos, Flesh Eaters en the Blasters. Als producer werkt hij onder meer met de Crash Test Dummies, John Lee Hooker, the Paladins, R.E.M. om er maar een paar te noemen. Op de cd staan tien nummers, waarvan negen eigen werkjes, al dan niet in samenwerking met een ander geschreven. De enige cover, het latin-achtige “Stay Here Tonight” is geschreven door Dante Chavez Vela. Muzikaal zitten we midden in de swingende R&B. Het zijn mooie nummers, waarin de heren ook nog iets te vertellen hebben, zoals in “Nobody’s Judging” en het titelnummer “Primates”, waaruit het sociaal engagement van de heren blijkt. Mijn persoonlijke favoriet is het fraaie bluesnummer “Bet It All On Love”. Een prima plaat.

The Greyhounds is an Austin, Texas-based duo consisting of vocalist and keyboardist Anthony Farrell and vocalist and guitarist Andrew Trube. The couple have been working together since 1999 and have just released their eighth record since their 2004 debut album. Their songs have been performed by artists such as Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. In addition to their own career as Greyhounds, they were part of JJ Grey & Mofro for a while.
With "Primates" the eighth album of the duo has been released. Besides them, only drummer and percussionist John Speice participates. In the past, Farrell and Trube produced their albums themselves. To spread their wings a little more, they have recruited Steve Berlin for this task. Berlin, who is part of Los Lobos, Flesh Eaters and the Blasters worked as producer with the Crash Test Dummies, John Lee Hooker, the Paladins, R.E.M. just to name a few. The CD contains ten songs, nine of which are their own works, either in collaboration with another or from themselves. The only cover, the latin-like “Stay Here Tonight” is written by Dante Chavez Vela. Musically we are in the middle of swinging R&B. These are beautiful songs, in which they also have something to say, such as in “Nobody's Judging” and the title track “Primates”, which shows their social commitment. My personal favorite is the beautiful blues song "Bet It All On Love". A very fine record.
