1976 and 1977 were two very pivotal years in the life of Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The band went through several lineup changes in the midst of a successful five-album run, while building an incredible following around the world with its unique blend of progressive rock, jazz, and blues.
Although Manfred himself was no stranger to earlier success on the pop charts, The Roaring Silence propelled Manfred Mann’s Earth Band to a whole new level of fame when the album reached the top of the charts in 1977.
Of course, Bruce Springsteen’s “Blinded By The Light” had all the makings of a hit, but it must have taken both the band and Springsteen by surprise, as it was the first number-one record for both of them. This track was hailed by a whole new legion of Mann fanatics, as the refreshing combination of lead vocals by newcomer Chris Thompson and Mann’s familiar keyboard phrasing made this track a modern classic rock standard. Even today, it remains one of the most-played songs in classic rock history.
