Dutch group Gallowstreet, forever seeking to break new ground within the world of the brass band, can finally announce new album Futurebrass, a hotstep and jump further towards the dance-floor, with a 10-track album inspired by the French Touch movement.
Futurebrass is woven with brass-blown melodies crafted around electronic motifs, ‘70s disco kick drums and ‘80s keyboard synths, much inspired by heroes like Daft Punk, Air, Phoenix and Cassius.
By using the concept of ‘future worlds’ the band seeks to sonically and aesthetically chronicle a narrative journey from dystopian cyberpunk, reflecting the world as it stands in 2026, toward solarpunk, a green and hopeful utopian vision wherein the systemic issues of our time are addressed. Their multidisciplinary live show is the stage for the band to make these desires even more tangible, immersive, and visually articulated.
Since their 2024 album A Trip Worth Making, the group have toured significantly, becoming a major reference within the brass band context, have recorded a KEXP live performance and can look back at previous performances at Lowlands, North Sea Jazz, Paradiso, Trabendo (Paris), Transmusicales, and Jazz à Vienne amongst many highlights.
In recent years, the global revival of 1980s cyberpunk aesthetics, 1990s/2000s anime culture, and films such as Drive and Blade Runner 2049 has reignited interest in the French Touch sound and its retro-futuristic palette. Its harmonic richness and dramatic hooks lend themselves naturally to brass instrumentation, allowing horns to function not only as rhythmic accents but as carriers of monumental, synth-like lead lines. The band fully embrace this key 1990’s movement within dance music, reinventing filtered disco samples and laying down warm analogue synthesisers, funk-infused basslines and compressed drum grooves.
C.I.E.L, French for sky, was recorded in their Dutch studio and is the first track they penned with the ‘future brass’ creative pursuit in mind. There’s plentiful electronic squelch, yet the band’s original and well-known grooviness persists. Previous singles include La Confluence with it’s 4 note, ravey bassline and sloping trumpet hook and Hydrogen, a slightly darker and cine-leaning banger that even brings a '90s era-defining drumroll to help build tension. Latest single is Astromaniac, a groove-based tune with a euphoric tendency lending to a funk workout and crescendo. San Cosmo’s persistent bass and drum loop is like a Metro Area jam with some ‘70s Shaft-like and soul-jazz horn vibes giving the song a gorgeous flow.
The French Touch movement, in which this new direction by Gallowstreet pivots, was a sound both nostalgic and futuristic. Gallowstreet have rejuvenated the sound, connecting to the emotionally charged melodic hooks and in doing so, has created a carefully crafted and fresh, sonic statement.
