Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar – A Beautiful Buzz
Samantha Martin en haar 9-koppige band Delta Sugar wonen in Toronto, Canada, maar zouden zo uit Memphis kunnen komen. Na een EP in 2004 volgden voor haar nu zes cd’s, waarvan vier met haar huidige band. De eerste met deze formatie, ‘Sending The Nightingale’ in 2015, zorgden voor een goede verkoop, een aantal nominaties en flink wat optredens. De opvolger ‘Run To Me’ uit 2018 werd zelfs genomineerd voor een JUNO, de Canadese muziekprijs de uit 2020 stammende ‘The Reckless One’ zette deze lijn gewoon voort.
Hoewel het op het gebied van nieuwe platen sindsdien stil is geweest hebben Samantha en band zeker niet stilgezeten; het optreden ging gewoon door. Covid en de geboorte van een zoon heeft de schema’s wat opgeschoven. Het hier geregistreerde optreden vond trouwens plaats toen zij zes maanden zwanger was. Als dat niet het bewijs is dat het werk gewoon doorging. Een nieuw studioalbum is overigens in voorbereiding en zal in de loop van 2027 uitkomen. Maar terug naar het huidige album. Tijdens een optreden in het A.C.T. Theatre in Maple Ridge (British Columbia, Canada) op 26 november 2022 liepen de bandrecorders mee. Het resultaat van dit optreden is nu op diverse geluidsdragers verkrijgbaar met de titel ‘A Beautiful Buzz’. En wat voor optreden! Ik denk dat maar weinigen stil konden blijven zitten. Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar is een overduidelijk vertegenwoordiger van de zogenaamde Memphis soul en heeft als voorbeelden duidelijk artiesten als Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding en Booker T & the MGs. Vanaf de eerste noten van ‘Love Is All Around’ tot aan de laatste tonen van ‘Loving Cup’ swingt het de pan uit. Acht van de twaalf nummers zijn door Samantha geschreven, al dan niet in samenwerking met een co-auteur. Nummers die wat mij betreft een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn de lekkere meezinger ‘Good Trouble’, de mooie ballad ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’, het swingende ‘Pass Me By’ en het samen met de Canadese bluesman Steve Marriner gezongen ‘The Shape I’m In’; inderdaad, geschreven door Robbie Robertson.
Een meer dan prima plaat, probeer hierop maar eens stil te blijven zitten, dat gaat je niet lukken.

Samantha Martin and her 9-member band Delta Sugar live in Toronto, Canada, but could easily be from Memphis. Following an EP in 2004, six CDs have now followed for her, four of which are with her current band. Although things have been quiet regarding new records since then, Samantha and her band certainly haven't been idle; performing simply continued. Covid and the birth of a son have shifted schedules somewhat. Incidentally, the performance recorded here took place when she was six months pregnant. If that isn't proof that work just kept going. A new studio album is currently in preparation and is set to be released sometime in 2027. But back to the current album. During a performance at the A.C.T. Theatre in Maple Ridge (British Columbia, Canada) on November 26, 2022, the tape recorders were running along. The result of this performance is now available on various media under the title ‘A Beautiful Buzz’. And what a performance! I think very few could remain seated. Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar are unmistakable representatives of the so-called Memphis soul, clearly taking artists like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Booker T & the MGs as role models. From the first notes of ‘Love Is All Around’ to the last notes of ‘Loving Cup’, it swings like crazy. Eight of the twelve songs were written by Samantha, either alone or in collaboration with a co-author. Tracks that deserve special mention as far as I'm concerned are the catchy sing-along ‘Good Trouble’, the beautiful ballad ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’, the swinging ‘Pass Me By’, and ‘The Shape I’m In’, sung together with Canadian bluesman Steve Marriner; indeed, written by Robbie Robertson.
A more than fine record; just try to sit still while listening to this, you won't succeed.
