Van dit soort muziek kan ik namelijk niet genoeg krijgen. Zoals ik bij het eerste album al schreef: dit smaakt naar meer. Veel meer!

Mede door de Britse blues radiomaker, schrijver en promotor met de Nederlandse naam (en roots) Pete Feenstra werd ik vorig jaar opmerkzaam gemaakt op de Britse blues-/powerformatie The Davidson Trio. De band rond bassist en zanger (met een bereik van 5 octaven!) Owen Davidson, gitarist Ben Bicknell en drummer Ellis Brown is afkomstig uit Birmingham en de West-Midlands. Davidson maakte ooit deel uit van de band van Uli Jon Roth en de Britse band Rumour. Samen met de Glenn Hughes tributeband Black Country Community speelde hij met Bicknell. 

Het eerste album ‘Cougar’ bleek herkenbaar en toch nieuw. Met bluesrock a la Free en Dr. Feelgood en virtuositeit, die neigde naar Clapton en Gary Moore.

Onlangs is hun twee plaat verschenen, ‘Follow You’, een EP dat slechts vijf nummers bevat. De drie heren pakken de richting op, die ze met hun eerste album waren ingeslagen. Alleen is de stijl nu scherper en is wat meer voor rock gekozen. Dit zonder de basis, bluesrock, uit het oog te verliezen. De vijf nummers zijn door de band zelf geschreven. Ook de productie is in eigen handengebleven, drummer Ellis Brown zat achter de knoppen van de Otterhead Studios in Rugby, Warwickshire. Met ‘Mr Greasy Snake’ wordt de aftrap genomen, een vlot swingende rocknummer, dat wordt gevolgd door het wat tragere ‘War’ en het venijnige ‘Dusillusion’. In beide nummers laat Bicknell horen ook een Hendrix/Trower adept te zijn. ‘Song For Phil’ is vanaf de eerste tonen duidelijk een eerbetoon aan Thin Lizzy en Phil Lynott. Een stevige basis, dubbel gitaarwerk en een vurige gitaarsolo aan het eind laten daar geen twijfel over bestaan. Het sluitstuk is de prachtige slowblues ‘Follow You’.

Een prima plaat(je) met één nadeel, het is gewoon te kort. Van dit soort muziek kan ik namelijk niet genoeg krijgen. Zoals ik bij het eerste album al schreef: dit smaakt naar meer. Veel meer!

Partly thanks to British blues radio host, writer, and promoter with the Dutch name (and roots) Pete Feenstra, I was made aware last year of the British blues/power formation The Davidson Trio. The band, centered around bassist and vocalist (with a range of 5 octaves!) Owen Davidson, guitarist Ben Bicknell, and drummer Ellis Brown, hails from Birmingham and the West Midlands. Davidson was once part of Uli Jon Roth's band and the British band Rumour. Together with the Glenn Hughes tribute band Black Country Community, he played with Bicknell. 

Their first album, ‘Cougar’, proved to be recognizable yet fresh. Featuring blues rock à la Free and Dr. Feelgood, and virtuosity leaning towards Clapton and Gary Moore.

Their second record, ‘Follow You’, an EP containing only five tracks, was released recently. The three gentlemen pick up the direction they had taken with their first album. However, the style is now sharper and leans more towards rock. This is done without losing sight of the foundation: blues rock. The five songs were written by the band themselves. Production also remained in their own hands; drummer Ellis Brown was behind the controls at Otterhead Studios in Rugby, Warwickshire. The album kicks off with ‘Mr Greasy Snake’, a fast-swinging rock number, which is followed by the somewhat slower ‘War’ and the venomous ‘Dusillusion’. In both songs, Bicknell shows he is also a Hendrix/Trower adept. ‘Song For Phil’ is clearly a tribute to Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott from the very first notes. A solid foundation, double guitar work, and a fiery guitar solo at the end leave no doubt about that. The closing piece is the beautiful slow blues ‘Follow You’.

A fine record with one drawback: it is simply too short. I simply cannot get enough of this kind of music. As I wrote with the first album: this leaves you wanting more. Much more!
