Artiest/Band: Michael Rubin

Michael Rubin was born in Livingston, New Jersey on November 6th, 1969, and grew up bouncing between New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Marin County, California — but I picked up my first harmonica almost by accident at 15, in October 1985, and it became my thing within minutes. After a stretch in New Orleans and Sonoma County, I landed in Austin in 1993 and fell straight into the blues scene, where the late Gary Primich took me under his wing and taught me that crafting a song mattered as much as blowing harp well.
From there, my harp playing got me recruited as the featured harmonica player for The Civil War, a musical that opened in Houston and went on to a Tony-nominated run on Broadway. After a year in New York, I came home to Austin and have been here ever since — playing with luminaries such as Ruthie Foster, Cyril Neville and a long list of others, my new project The Outlaw Years, and holding down two decades with The McMercy Family Band.
These days I split my time between performing, recording, and teaching private harmonica lessons — in person in South Austin and online with students around the world. I've put together nearly 100 free theory lessons on YouTube, and I've got two solo albums out, I'll Worry If I Wanna and 5 Minutes of Passion. Below are the questions I get asked most.
