Artiest/Band: Vaneese Thomas
|
Multi Blues Music Awards Nominee, Vaneese Thomas, delivers her most intimate collection to date. Equal parts soul confession, blues testimony, and her wisdom, the album reflects a lifetime of experience while never losing sight of hope.
For more than four decades, Vaneese Thomas has built a career that bridges Memphis soul tradition, contemporary blues, gospel, and classic R&B. The daughter of legendary entertainer Rufus Thomas and sister of Carla Thomas, she has forged an unmistakable musical identity of her own - one that's earned acclaim not only as a recording artist, but also as an award-winning songwriter, producer, arranger, and one of the most sought- after background vocalists in music. Her voice has been heard alongside everyone from Stevie Wonder and Sting to Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Joe Cocker, Bruce Springsteen and Dr. John. Yet her own recordings remain deeply personal statements rooted in honesty and emotional truth.
With Window To My Soul, Thomas delivers her most intimate collection to date. Equal parts soul confession, blues testimony, and her wisdom, the album reflects a lifetime of experience while never losing sight of hope. Across eight emotionally rich performances, she examines love, resilience, disappointment, self-worth, and redemption with a voice that sounds both timeless and deeply lived in.
The album opens with "I Still Got The Blues," a slow-burning soul blues declaration that dismantles the myth that success alone brings fulfillment. Thomas reflects on a lifetime spent chasing wealth, only to realize that "money didn't change things." As she repeatedly reminds listeners, "I still got the blues," the song becomes less about heartbreak than about recognizing what truly gives life meaning.
"Every Moment Is A Lifetime," shifts the mood toward perseverance and optimism. Built around an uplifting groove, Thomas encourages listeners to embrace life's fleeting blessings rather than dwell on yesterday's disappointments. Her message is beautifully summed up in the refrain, "Every moment is a lifetime," while the song's hopeful reminder that "the sweetest moments are waiting for you" serves as one of the album's emotional anchors. Rich horn arrangements and an energetic rhythm section give the recording an uplifting sense of momentum without overshadowing the song's heartfelt message.
One of the record's most memorable performances arrives on "Ain't No Reason (For A Man Like You)," an unapologetic blues shuffle that confronts manipulation and emotional dishonesty head-on. Thomas delivers every line with conviction as she declares there "ain't no reason" to tolerate someone who continually spreads heartache. The song's punchy horn section, Rob Paparozzi's harmonica, and Thomas' commanding vocal performance create one of the album's strongest traditional blues moments.
Elsewhere, Window To My Soul continues to balance vulnerability with strength. Songs like "Livin’ With A Lie" and "Ain't Gonna Be No One's Fool" examine broken relationships through the lens of self-respect rather than bitterness, while one of several solo-written songs "That's A Woman" celebrates resilience, dignity, and everyday heroism. "Save Me" reveals emotional vulnerability, and "I'm A Diamond" is an empowering reminder that life's greatest pressures often produce its greatest strengths.
Throughout the album, Thomas surrounds herself with an exceptional ensemble that serves her songs rather than competing for attention. Guitarist Al Orlo and bassist Paul Adamy provide a consistently soulful foundation, while drummer Ross Pederson anchors the sessions with understated authority. Dave Keyes contributes tasteful keyboards throughout much of the record, with tasteful horn arrangements adding warmth and texture across several standout tracks.
Rather than relying on nostalgia, Window To My Soul demonstrates why Vaneese Thomas continues to be one of soul music's most authentic voices. These songs speak to universal experiences - love gained, love lost, personal growth, perseverance, and the search for peace - with honesty that can only come from an artist who has lived every word she sings. She also proves once again that authenticity never goes out of style. Davis Coen
