Eddie Kold Band ft Larry “Doc” Watkins – Blues In My Heart
Al sinds zijn eerste bezoek aan Chicago wijdt de Duitse zanger/gitarist Eddie Kold zijn carrière aan de Chicagoblues. Jorg Fennekold, zoals hij bekend staat bij de burgerlijke stand, bezocht de diverse clubs en zag de legendes spelen: Eddie Clearwater, Magic Slim, Junior Wells, Fenton Robinson om er maar een paar te noemen. Bij dit eerste bezoek in 1986 is het niet gebleven, hij keert nog regelmatig terug naar de bakermat van deze cityblues. Thuis in Duitsland richtte hij de Eddie Kold Band op, waarmee hij regelmatig door Duitsland en de rest van Europa heeft getoerd. Sinds 2004 maakt de in Virginia geboren zanger Larry “Doc” Watkins deel uit van de band. De andere vaste leden zijn Klaus Brunschede (bas), Christian Wubben (drums) en Lucas Diehl (toetsen, piano).
In december 2025 is het derde album van de band verschenen, getiteld ‘Blues In My Heart’. Hierop staan dertien nummers, waarvan elf van eigen hand zijn. De twee covers zijn ‘Further On Up The Road’, bekend van o.m. Bobby Bland, Eric Clapton en Freddie King, en ‘Last Two Dollars’, dat bekend is gemaakt door Johnnie Taylor. Met de opener ‘Around Three Or Four’, een fraaie ballad, wordt meteen de toon gezet. Een goed opgebouwd nummer, dat als smaakmaker nieuwsgierig maakt naar de rest van het album. Met een mooie mix van rustige en uptempo nummers wordt de luisteraar getrakteerd op een meer dan uitstekend aanbod van muziek. De basis is overduidelijk de Chicagoblues, maar Eddie Kold is niet bang om uitstapjes te maken naar soul en funk. Dit komt de variatie sowieso ten goede. Nummers die wat mij betreft een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn het al genoemde ‘Last Two Dollars’ met gastzangeres Honeydrew Melon Davenport, de ballad ‘Burnin’ Outta Control’, waarin Kold excelleert op gitaar, wat voor de slowblues ‘Lovesick Blues’ ook geldt.
Voor liefhebbers van goedgemaakte muziek en sowieso van goede blues is ‘Blues In My Heart’ een absolute aanrader. Grote klasse.

Ever since his first visit to Chicago, German singer/guitarist Eddie Kold has dedicated his career to the Chicago blues. Jorg Fennekold, as he is known in the civil registry, visited various clubs and saw the legends play: Eddie Clearwater, Magic Slim, Junior Wells, Fenton Robinson, to name just a few. This first visit in 1986 was not his only one; he still returns regularly to the birthplace of this city blues. Back home in Germany, he founded the Eddie Kold Band, with which he has regularly toured Germany and the rest of Europe. Since 2004, Virginia-born singer Larry “Doc” Watkins has been part of the band. The other permanent members are Klaus Brunschede (bass), Christian Wubben (drums), and Lucas Diehl (keyboards, piano).
The band's third album, titled ‘Blues In My Heart’, was released in December 2025. It features thirteen songs, eleven of which are original compositions. The two covers are ‘Further On Up The Road’, made famous by Bobby Bland, Eric Clapton, and Freddie King, among others, and ‘Last Two Dollars’, made famous by Johnnie Taylor. The tone is set immediately with the opener ‘Around Three Or Four’, a beautiful ballad. A well-structured track that serves as a teaser, making you curious about the rest of the album. With a nice mix of quiet and uptempo songs, the listener is treated to a more than excellent selection of music. The foundation is clearly Chicago blues, but Eddie Kold is not afraid to venture into soul and funk. This certainly benefits the variety. Songs that, in my opinion, deserve special mention are the aforementioned ‘Last Two Dollars’ with guest vocalist Honeydrew Melon Davenport, the ballad ‘Burnin’ Outta Control’, in which Kold excels on guitar, which also applies to the slow blues ‘Lovesick Blues’. For lovers of well-made music, and good blues in general, ‘Blues In My Heart’ is highly recommended. Top class.
