Jen M (Lil’ Red & The Rooster / Jennifer Milligan) to share her new single, “Why Don’t You Do Right?” featuring Bobby Floyd, released June 12, 2026 via Lil’ Red Records, along with its official music video.

This release marks jen M's debut as a solo creative voice while remaining deeply rooted in the Retro Modern Blues world she built alongside Pascal Fouquet (The Rooster). Rather than presenting the song as a traditional jazz standard, jen M reimagines it through a raw, cinematic lens, shifting the narrative away from glamour and fantasy into something far more grounded in modern reality. The song is a haunting, atmospheric duet shaped by washboard textures, bongos, a weathered upright piano and the distinctive tone of G-Louis’s gitjo.

Rather than focusing on the song's traditional themes of wealth and glamour, this interpretation places the story in a world of flickering lights, clanging radiators, and everyday struggle. It's an atmospheric duet that bridges vintage blues and jazz traditions with contemporary storytelling. The recording grew organically during sessions for our album "7" with Bobby Floyd and captures a spontaneous collaboration that quickly became one of our favorite studio moments.

The release is accompanied by a striking music video filmed in Westerville, Ohio. Set against the backdrop of a transformed coffeehouse jazz club, the video explores the relationship between artists, audiences, and the changing economics of music. Blending vintage aesthetics with modern smartphone imagery, it serves as both a celebration of live music culture and a thoughtful reflection on the value of art in today's world.

lyrics

Had plenty money 1922, but you let other women make a foul of you.
Why don’t you do right? Do right like those other men. Yes they do.
Get outta here and get me some money too.

You’re sitting there wondering what it’s all about, man
Ain’t got no money, well, gonna put you out.
Do right. Do right. Like all those other men, I promise they do.
Now get out of here and get me some money too.

If you had prepared 20 years ago, man, you wouldn’t now be wondering from door to door.
Baby, do right. Like those other men do. Yes they do.
Get outta here and get me some money too.

Yeah, I fell for your jiving and I took you in.
Now all you’ve got to offer me’s a drink of gin?
Do right. Do Right like the other men … mmm yes, they do.
Do I have to say it again? Really? Huh. I don’t think so man.

Like those other men do, get me some money too.

Like those other men do.
Like those other men do.
Like those other men you know they do.
