Intervie w met: Nico Barberan van de Nico Barberan Band
Als veelzijdig artiest, creatief en actief muzikant, beweegt hij zich moeiteloos tussen elektrische en klassieke gitaar en combineert hij blues, rock en Latijns-Amerikaanse populaire muziek tot een uniek eigen geluid. Recente singles zoals "Horizon", "Sing Laugh & Cry" en "You Are My Love" weerspiegelen zijn passie voor zowel muziek als het leven. Zijn nieuwste album, Away Blues, is een eigentijds, energiek bluesrockproject met originele nummers waarin de gitaar krachtig en expressief klinkt.

Wie zijn of waren jullie grootste inspiratiebronnen of rolmodellen?
Ik wil graag John Lee Hooker noemen. Hij was mijn eerste rolmodel op de gitaar en in de blues. Ik was 13 jaar oud toen ik zijn album Boom Boom kreeg (ik heb de hoes nog steeds), en ik was er helemaal van ondersteboven. Ik begon zijn riffs te begrijpen – hoe hij ze speelde en hoe hij zijn groove creëerde. Het kostte me een hele avond om te snappen wat de gitaar precies deed. Daarna had mijn gitaarpad een duidelijke richting: de blues. Later luisterde ik naar de klassiekers, en een van mijn grootste helden – tot op de dag van vandaag – is B.B. King, vanwege zijn sound, zijn spel, zijn podiumpresentatie en zijn verhalen. Tegenwoordig geniet ik ervan om naar Eric Gales te luisteren, die een geweldige combinatie is van gitaarheld en bluesartiest.
Hoe schrijf je je liedjes?
Mijn liedjes komen voort uit ervaringen, gevoelens en gedachten. Ik haal inspiratie uit de natuur, wandelen, douchen en natuurlijk jammen op mijn gitaar.
Meestal componeer ik eerst de muziek – een riff, een melodie of een akkoordenschema. Daarna ontstaan de teksten, die me naar het grotere geheel leiden. Ik schrijf blues, folk, rock en Latijns-Amerikaanse nummers – ze zitten allemaal in mijn ziel.
Walking with the Stars is bijvoorbeeld geïnspireerd op mijn oma. Ze verloor haar man (mijn opa) lang geleden en mist hem nog steeds, in de hoop hem ooit weer te zien. Mijn opa had beloofd voor altijd bij haar te blijven, maar die belofte kon hij niet nakomen – nu "wandelt hij met de sterren".
Een ander voorbeeld is Red Shoes, waarin ik het verhaal vertel van een ontmoeting met een engel met rode schoenen in Chicago, terwijl ik blues speelde. Elk nummer heeft een verhaal en een diepe betekenis voor mij.
Hoe verliep de opname van het album?
Ik heb het genoegen gehad om voor al mijn muziek met een studioteam te werken. Ze komen uit Chili en we nemen al meer dan 15 jaar samen op.
Ik werk meestal eerst aan de composities, maak dan concepten en een partituur (ik vind het belangrijk om sterke arrangementen voor mijn nummers te hebben). Daarna nemen we in secties op. Het is erg leuk en we genieten echt van het proces.
Ik ben ook dol op de suggesties van mijn studiomuzikanten en vrienden – ik vind het fijn om hun persoonlijke touch in de muziek te horen. Dat is iets heel bijzonders.
Beschrijf jullie sound voor lezers die nog nooit van jullie hebben gehoord.
De Nico Barberan Band combineert blues en rock met een Latijns tintje. Away Blues is een goede referentie voor wat ik tegenwoordig doe: energiek, dynamisch en vol gitaarsolo's.
Ik vind het heerlijk om mezelf uit te drukken via de gitaar. Het is een rauw geluid, met een krachtige en brullende toon.
Wat zijn jullie toekomstplannen als band?
We spelen veel en dat willen we graag zo houden! We hebben onlangs tours in Arizona en Chili afgerond en we gaan binnenkort weer op pad.
We staan open voor optredens op meer festivals en podia over de hele wereld. We zijn altijd op zoek naar mogelijkheden om onze muziek en energie op het podium te delen.
We brengen dit jaar ook een nieuw album en verschillende singles uit, dus houd onze muziek in de gaten!

Who are or were your biggest role models?
I would like to mention John Lee Hooker. He was my first role model on the guitar and in the blues. I was 13 years old when I got his album Boom Boom (I still have the cover), and it blew my mind. I started to understand his riffs—how he played them and how he created his groove. It took me a full evening to figure out what the guitar was doing. After that, my guitar path had a clear direction: the blues.
Later, I listened to the classics, and one of my biggest heroes—still to this day—is B.B. King, for his sound, his playing, his stage presence, and his storytelling. Nowadays, it’s a delight to listen to Eric Gales, who represents a great combination of guitar hero and blues artist.
How do you write your songs?
My songs come from experiences, feelings, and thoughts. I get inspiration from nature, walking, shower time, and of course, jamming on my guitar. Usually, I compose the music first—a riff, a melody, or a chord progression. After that, the lyrics appear and guide me toward the bigger picture. I write blues, folk, rock, and Latin songs—all of them are part of my soul.
For example, Walking with the Stars is inspired by my grandmother. She lost her husband (my grandfather) a long time ago, and she still misses him, hoping to see him again someday. My grandfather promised to stay with her forever, but that promise couldn’t be fulfilled—now he is “walking with the stars.” Another example is Red Shoes, where I tell the story of when I met an angel with red shoes in Chicago while I was playing the blues. Each song has a story and deep meaning for me.
How did the recording of the album go?
I had the pleasure of working with a studio team for all my music. They are from Chile, and we have been recording together for over 15 years.
I usually work on the compositions first, then create drafts along with a music chart (I really like having strong arrangements for my songs). After that, we record in sections. It’s a lot of fun, and we truly enjoy the process.
I also love the suggestions from my studio musicians and friends—I enjoy hearing their personal touch in the music. That’s something very special.
Describe your sound for readers who have never heard of you.
The Nico Barberan Band blends blues and rock with a Latin flavor. Away Blues is a great reference for what I’m doing nowadays: energetic, dynamic, and full of guitar solos.
I love expressing myself through the guitar. It’s a raw sound, with a powerful and roaring tone.
What are your future expectations as a band?
We are playing a lot, and we want to keep it! We recently completed tours in Arizona and Chile, and we’ll be back on the road soon.
We are open to performing at more festivals and venues around the world. We’re always looking for opportunities to share our music and energy on stage.
We will also be releasing a new album and several singles this year—so stay tuned for more music!
