Artiest/Band: The Right Reverend Crow, Nathan Bell

Meer dan alleen een alter ego of artiestennaam, vertegenwoordigt The Reverend Bells bijdrage aan de blues die hem al vanaf het begin van zijn muzikale carrière, meer dan 50 jaar geleden, heeft gevoed. Als zoon van de overleden Amerikaanse dichter Marvin Bell, is The Reverend (Bell) poëtisch en zijn woorden raken je diep en oprecht.
Vijf jaar later bracht singer-songwriter Nathan Bell de ritmesectie van Frank Swart en Alvino Bennett weer samen in de Skunkworks Studio in Capitola, Californië.
Halverwege de marathonsessie, die 28 nummers zou opleveren, stelden Swart en uitvoerend producer Brian Brinkerhoff voor dat Bell de elektrische gitaar zou oppakken voor een paar van de meer bluesachtige nummers. Beginnend met de rauwe blues van het scherpe 'You Say Nothing' en eindigend met de verpletterende gesproken tekst van 'A Woman', het langverwachte antwoord op Free's 'Alright Now', creëerde het trio een krachtige soul/blues-mix die het perfecte vehikel bleek voor Bells antifascistische, pro-rechtvaardigheidsliederen. Wetende dat ze iets goeds in handen hadden, lieten ze de opnames doorlopen tot ze in totaal 13 brutaal eerlijke en urgent relevante nummers hadden opgenomen.
Zo werd het album 'Demokracy Blues' geboren en nam het trio Bells alias aan: The Right Reverend Crow.
Percussionist en drummer Alvino Bennett is al meer dan 60 jaar de drijvende kracht achter een lange lijst van topartiesten. Hoogtepunten zijn onder andere lange periodes met Dave Mason en Robin Trower, evenals projecten met legendes als Stevie Wonder, Minnie Ripperton en Chaka Khan. Bassist/producer Frank Swart is de bedenker van de befaamde instrumentale serie Funkwrench Blues. Op zijn cv staan ook samenwerkingen met artiesten als Norah Jones, Johnny Copeland, Patty Griffin, John Hiatt, Guitar Shorty en Morphine. Op een paar nummers wordt hij vergezeld door de veelbelovende jonge bluesgitarist Sean "Mack" McDonald, waardoor The Right Reverend Crow de band van onze tijd is.
Zanger en gitarist Nathan Bell heeft meer dan 40 jaar onder de radar gevlogen, waarbij hij de veelgeprezen albums van Family Man Quartet schreef en produceerde voordat hij in 2018 een contract tekende bij Need to Know Music. Hij werd door Americana-UK verkozen tot beste mannelijke Americana-artiest en stond bovenaan de alternatieve folk- en Americana-hitlijsten in de VS en Europa. Zijn albums verschijnen regelmatig in de top tien van het jaar, ondanks dat Bell zelden op tournee gaat.

The Right Reverend Crow made his first appearance during the recording sessions for critically acclaimed American songwriter Nathan Bell’s 2021 study of modern American life, Red, White and American Blues
More than just an alter-ego or stage name, The Reverend represents Bell’s offering to the Blues that have nourished him from the first days of his musical career, 50 plus years ago. The son of the late American Poet, Marvin Bell, The Reverend (Bell) is poetic, and his words hit hard and real.
Five years on songwriter Nathan Bell reconvened the rhythm section of Frank Swart and Alvino Bennett at the Skunkworks Studio in Capitola, California.
Part way through the marathon session that would generate 28 songs, Swart and executive producer Brian Brinkerhoff suggested that Bell pick up the electric guitar for a couple of the more bluesy numbers. Starting with the dead thumb blues of the scathing ‘You Say Nothing’ and ending with the crushing spoken word assault of ‘A Woman’, the long overdue answer song to Free’s ‘Alright Now’, the trio created a muscular soul/blues mix that proved the perfect vehicle for Bell’s anti-fascist, pro-justice songs. Knowing they had a good thing going, they let the tape roll until they had captured a total of 13 brutally honest and urgently relevant songs.
Thus, was born the album ‘Demokracy Blues’ and the trio took on Bell’s alias: The Right Reverend Crow.
