De uit Detroit afkomstige Eliza Neals is een klassiek geschoolde operazangeres, die – gelukkig voor ons – de afslag heeft genomen naar blues en rock. Na haar debuutalbum in 1997 heeft zij een groeiend aantal fans onder zowel het publiek als haar collega-muzikanten. Dit laatste blijkt uit de samenwerking met artiesten als Popa Chubby, Joe Louis Walker, Tony Joe White, Buddy Guy om er maar een paar te noemen. Naast zangeres is zij een uitstekende pianiste, schrijft haar eigen nummers en produceert zelf haar platen. 

Onlangs is haar dertiende album verschenen, met als titel ‘Thunder In The House’ Hierop vinden wij negen door haar zelf geschreven nummers, al dan niet alleen of in samenwerking met anderen. Ondersteund wordt zij door een uitstekende band, waarvan gitarist Michael Puwal het vaakst te horen is. Deze Puwal schreef ook mee aan vier nummers en was de mixing engineer en co-producer. Naast Eliza, die zingt en piano en Hammond B3 speelt en het album geproduceerd heeft, en de al genoemde Puwal (gitaar), spelen nog drummers Steve Lacross en Justin Headley en bassist Doug Woern mee. Verdere ondersteuning komt van Mark ‘Muggie Doo’ Leach en Detroit Mike Hepner (beiden op Hammond B3) en gitarist Frankie Maneiro. Stuk voor stuk muzikanten met een indrukwekkende staat van dienst. 

Met ‘Thunder In The House’ horen we Eliza Neals, zoals we haar kennen. Een stevig, rauw stemgeluid, waarmee ze zowel kan brullen als fluisteren, en stoere melodische bluesrock. Met ‘Speedy Beady’ en ‘Love Will’, waarmee het album begint wordt meteen de toon gezet. Op een andere voet gaat het verder met ‘Blues Bombshell’, een fijn swingende shuffle. Op deze wijze leiden Eliza en band de luisteraar door een prettig variatie aan stijlen en tempo’s. Nummers die voor mij een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn de bluesshuffle ‘Unoriginal Bitch’ met een mooie gitaarsolo van Puwal, het stampende ‘One Monkey (Don’t Stop No Show)’ en het dreigende titelnummer ‘Thunder In The House’. 

Wat kan ik er verder nog aan toevoegen? Eigenlijk niets. Zoals steeds opnieuw heeft Eliza Neals weer een prima album uitgebracht. Klasse.

In addition to Eliza, who sings, plays piano and Hammond B3, and produced the album, and the aforementioned Puwal (guitar), drummers Steve Lacross and Justin Headley and bassist Doug Woern also play on the album. Further support comes from Mark ‘Muggie Doo’ Leach and Detroit Mike Hepner (both on Hammond B3) and guitarist Frankie Maneiro. Each of them are musicians with an impressive track record

With ‘Thunder In The House’, we hear Eliza Neals as we know her: a solid, raw vocal sound capable of both roaring and whispering, and tough, melodic blues rock. With ‘Speedy Beady’ and ‘Love Will’, which open the album, the tone is set immediately. It continues on a different footing with ‘Blues Bombshell’, a finely swinging shuffle. In this way, Eliza and the band lead the listener through a pleasant variety of styles and tempos. Tracks that deserve special mention from me are the blues shuffle ‘Unoriginal Bitch’ with a beautiful guitar solo by Puwal, the stomping ‘One Monkey (Don’t Stop No Show)’, and the menacing title track ‘Thunder In The House’

What else can I add? Actually, nothing. As always, Eliza Neals has released another fine album. Class act.
