BIG HARP GEORGE - BLUES SHOVELER (DIGITAL SINGLE)
This tune came about through an email exchange with my friend Serge Bellerose of Drummondville, Quebec, who, for many years, hosted a blues program on CFID 103.7 as “Sonny Boy Blue.” We talk about many topics, but he was recently griping about a particularly heavy snow storm in his area, and signed off as “Blues Shoveler.” That tickled me, and I immediately promised him that if I ever recorded another Christmas album, I’d write him a tune with that title. For some reason, the Junior Wells version of Sonny Boy’s Help Me immediately came to mind as the musical model for the tune. But the more I thought about it, the more it felt like the song could be a vehicle to comment on current events, not just a joke between friends. Fortunately, we already had session time scheduled at Greaseland to record our next album, so I worked up the lyrics and we cracked it out in a take or two.
