De titel “On My Own” verraadt het al een beetje en het feit dat ‘Band’ uit de naam verdwenen is zal een tweede hint zijn. Laurence Jones heeft dit album inderdaad helemaal alleen gezongen en gespeeld.

De titel “On My Own” verraadt het al een beetje en het feit dat ‘Band’ uit de naam verdwenen is zal een tweede hint zijn. Laurence Jones heeft dit album inderdaad helemaal alleen gezongen en gespeeld. De op 13 februari 1992 in de buurt van Liverpool geboren Jones heeft sinds zijn debuutalbum “Thunder In The Sky” in 2012 een naam weten te maken als gitaarvirtuoos en een indrukwekkende loopbaan opgebouwd met stevige melodieuze blues, tot nog toe altijd vergezeld van een band.

“On My Own” is het tiende album van Jones en de elf nummers zijn allemaal van eigen hand. De productie was in handen van Jones en Wayne Proctor, die bekend is als o.m. de drummer van King King. Het album is het resultaat van een zware periode, die Jones achter de rug heeft, veroorzaakt door de Ziekte van Crohn. Dat is een ontsteking van het spijsverteringskanaal, een chronische aandoening waar Jones al jarenlang aan lijdt. Zoals te verwachten zijn de nummers niet al te vrolijk, eigenlijk best somber te noemen, hoewel naar het einde toe wat meer hoop en vrolijkheid klinkt. De somberheid is te begrijpen, het is een ziekte waar hij nooit meer van af zal komen. Dit komt het sterkst naar voren in het indrukwekkende titelnummer “On My Own”, waarin hij zingt: ‘This is the right time/Leaving it all behind/I can feel it in my bones/I’ll be doing it on my own’. Andere nummers die een aparte vermelding verdienen zijn het aan zijn opa opgedragen “One Life”, het voor zichzelf sprekende “I’m Giving Up” en “Do You Feel The Same?”, waarin hij prachtig gitaarwerk laat horen. Het laatste nummer “Beautiful” is het enige nummer op het album, dat wat vrolijkheid en hoop laat horen. 

Zoals hierboven al vernoemd is dit het minst vrolijke album van Laurence Jones. Het is knap dat hij zijn wanhoop en kwetsbaarheid in deze elf nummers naar voren heeft kunnen brengen en dit als een waardevol kunstwerk heeft kunnen afleveren. Petje af, groots werk.

As expected, the songs are not particularly cheerful; they are actually quite gloomy, though towards the end, they become more hopeful and cheerful. The sadness is understandable; it's a disease he'll never recover from. This is most evident in the impressive title track, "On My Own," where he sings: "This is the right time/Leaving it all behind/I can feel it in my bones/I'll ​​be doing it on my own." Other songs worthy of special mention are "One Life," dedicated to his grandfather, the self-explanatory "I'm Giving Up," and "Do You Feel The Same?", which features beautiful guitar work. The final track, "Beautiful," is the only track on the album that offers any hint of cheerfulness and hope.

As mentioned above, this is Laurence Jones's least cheerful album. It's remarkable that he managed to convey his despair and vulnerability in these eleven songs and deliver it as a valuable work of art. Hats off to them, a magnificent piece.
