Orange Blossoms is a masterpiece of soul-shaking music, as JJ’s deep Southern roots and skill as a storyteller shine through, whether he’s rocking with gospel-tent fervor or slowly winding his gritty voice around a lyric of heartbreak and loss. It’s an aggressively groove-driven record fueled by JJ’s smoldering vocals and funk-infused guitar playing.
It’s with great pleasure that I send you the remastered audio files for our vinyl version of JJ Grey & Mofro’s wonderful album Orange Blossoms. This deeply rooted, intensely emotional album was released on CD back in 2008, but it’s never before appeared on LP. For this release, to immerse the listeners in the album’s gorgeous sound quality, we’ve remastered it on two separate 45 rpm discs in a deluxe gatefold jacket. As with all of JJ’s records, it blends swamp funk, rock & roll, old school R&B, Americana, and blues, all woven together by JJ’s unforgettable original lyrics and his soul-drenched vocals. This double LP will be released on October 31, 2025, so please hold reviews and airplay until close to that date.
Orange Blossoms has deservedly been one of the most popular and best-selling CDs in the Alligator catalog. JJ’s huge fan base embraced the album, as did hundreds of radio stations and the press. NPR described Orange Blossoms as “a vivid blend of blues, Southern rock and funk, complete with richly evocative lyrics and an easygoing sense of blue-collar storytelling.” The New York Times called it “rich, funky swamp blues, rootsy rock and gritty soul…Grey celebrates life’s fundamental joys with a knack for simple truths.” USA Today called it “a world-beating blend of Southern rock, blues and Florida swamp soul,” while The Los Angeles Daily News said, “blue-eyed Florida bluesman JJ Grey pays funky, nostalgic and sometimes raunchy tribute to his home state on this soulful, rocking collection. Grey takes us on a gritty emotional ride.” AllMusic Guide said, “Orange Blossoms is a blend of deep Southern soul and funk, low-key yet surging backwoods R&B. This is the most elaborately produced of his albums, but like the chitlin’ circuit blues in his blood, there is nothing slick about it. Grey has matured into a compelling vocalist, and it is his emotional yet subtle singing that elevates this already powerful material.”
Orange Blossoms was cut in St. Augustine, Florida, close to JJ’s beloved ancestral backwoods family home. JJ’s love of the natural beauty and harmony of his birthplace is woven into many of the songs. It was recorded and mixed by Dan Prothero, who worked in the studio with JJ for many years. JJ’s original songs range from the gritty, nostalgic title track, to the hilarious On Fire, to the driving The Higher You Climb, to the delicate, meditative I Believe (In Everything). It’s one of JJ Grey & Mofro’s masterworks.
