The Davidson Trio bestaat uit bassist en zanger (met bereik van 5 octaven!) Owen Davidson, gitarist Ben Bicknell en drummer Ellis Brown en is afkomstig uit Birmingham en de West-Midlands. Davidson maakte ooit deel uit van de band van Uli Jon Roth en de Britse band Rumour. Samen met de Glenn Hughes tributeband Black Country Community speelde hij met Bicknell. Drummer Brown mag een ware ontdekking worden genoemd. Hij is de motor van de band, degene die het ritme en de groove bepaalt.
Onlangs verscheen van The Davidson Trio het debuutalbum “Cougar”. Zoals ik al schreef hoor je meteen iets bekend aan hun muziek. Ik hoor de bluesrock van Free en Dr. Feelgood, en ook het virtuoze van Cream en Clapton. En het geheel vervaardigd met een helderheid en strakheid, zonder te kort te doen aan de ziel van de muziek. Het blijft rauw, het blijft stevig, nergens wordt het klinisch. Metaforisch gezien leggen drums en bas een stevig fundament, waarop gitaar en zang het huis kunnen afbouwen. Bicknell is een uitstekende, smaakvolle gitarist en Davidson een meer dan exceptionele zanger met een bereik van vijf octaven, waarmee hij makkelijk een stevige rocksong kan brullen als een ballade kan fluisteren.
Meteen bij de eerste nummers “Medusa Touch” en “The Deep” wordt de luisteraar bij de lurven gegrepen en pas losgelaten als de laatste tonen wegebben. Andere nummers die een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn de southern rocksong “Bad Moon” en de bluesballad “Cougar”, het titelnummer. Een uitstekend debuut, smaakt naar meer, ik hoop zeker op een vervolg.

From the first notes I had something like: “Familiar, yet new”. Old-School Blues & Classic Rock, and then dressed in a new jacket. That is how you could describe The Davidson Trio. I got the tip to listen to them from the British blues radio producer, writer and promoter with the Dutch name (and roots) Pete Feenstra.

I hear the blues rock of Free and Dr. Feelgood, and also the virtuosity of Cream and Clapton. And the whole thing is made with clarity and tightness, without detracting from the soul of the music. It remains raw, it remains solid, never becomes clinical. Metaphorically speaking, drums and bass lay a solid foundation, on which guitar and vocals can finish the house. Bicknell is an excellent, tasteful guitarist and Davidson a more than exceptional singer with a range of five octaves, with which he can easily roar a solid rock song as whisper a ballad.
Immediately with the first numbers "Medusa Touch" and "The Deep" the listener is grabbed by the scruff of the neck and only let go when the last notes fade away. Other numbers that deserve a special mention are the southern rock song "Bad Moon" and the blues ballad "Cougar", the title track. An excellent debut, tastes like more, I certainly hope for a sequel.
