We wondered how you were getting on with Moving at the Speed of Trees, the wonderfully eclectic new solo album by veteran sideman (Ray Bonneville, I See Hawks in L.A.), pianist and accordionist extraordinaire, Richie Lawrence, his first solo release since Rue Sanxay in 2015, which is scheduled for release on March 21 2025 on Big Book Records?

The plan was to co-produce this record with longtime friend, best man at Richie and Katie’s wedding, guitarist extraordinaire, master of lyric and song, and music accomplice, Paul Lacques (1954-2024) (I See Hawks In L.A.). All was at the ready to record in L.A. at the studio of former Hawks drummer, Shawn Nourse, working with some compadres from the Los Angeles, CA area. Sadly, the universe had an alternate plan. Paul will be forever in our hearts and minds and, while not appearing on this record, he is most certainly present in spirit.

Moing at the Speed of Trees reflects life experience as only an elder statesman can portray. A grandfather’s immigration, infidelity, broken dreams, life long lived, the unconditional hopes and prayers of parenthood, instrumental poetry and the wonderful waltz. Twelve songs, including two co-written by Richie and Paul, one co-written with Robert Rex Waller Jr., one cover written by writer exceptionnel et ami, Ray Bonneville, supported by a superlative cast of characters. Most important being co-writer, singer and artist, wife, Katie Thomas, without whom Trees would not be possible. From I See Hawks In L.A., Victoria Jacobs, Paul Marshall, Rob Waller and engineer/drummer Shawn Nourse (Dwight Yoakam). And with Simeon Pillich (Ry Cooder, John Hiatt), Tony Gilkyson (X, Lone Justice), Rick Shea (Dave Alvin), Giorgi Khokhobashvili (Jessica Malone), Dave Zirbel (I See Hawks In L.A.) and Stefanie Naifeh, the songs flourish.
