Three-time Grammy nominated, Blues Hall of Fame artist, John Primer takes a look back to where it all began and decides to pay tribute to his simple beginnings from a sharecropper farm in Camden, Mississippi with this beautiful new album. He digs deep, sharing his earliest memories of hearing the blues and gospel growing up. 

The raw energy and passion are felt throughout this new release. John recorded this new album in Clarksdale, MS, to really amplify the authentic, traditional blues feel. Gary Vincent’s Soundstage was the perfect studio for him to feel right at home. John invited Mississippi musicians to play with him on this album to ensure it sounded and felt like his home.

 John Primer is from Camden, MS in 1945. He was born on sharecropper land. Growing up working in the fields, searching for a better life, he migrated to Chicago with his mother in 1963. His blues career began on Maxwell St. playing for tips, to then getting his first gig at Theresa’s Lounge in the 70’s. John was the band leader for Jr. Wells, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, and Magic Slim before leading his own Real Deal Blues Band in 1995. He was taught by the masters and is one of the last

“The songs on Grown in Mississippi have a lot of meaning to me. They represent sounds from my childhood, feelings I had while singing in church, rhythms and beats I heard on the radio and while workin in the fields. ”John’s Blues Holler”, was inspired by the field hollers I would hear workin’ in the fields. ”Born in Mississippi”, was inspired by the first blues I heard my family members playin’. “Blues Before Sunrise” always made me think about getting up early to work in the fields. “Down in the Bottom” pays tribute to Howlin’ Wolf. I would listen to him on the radio growin’ up. “Walkin’ Blues”, honors Muddy Waters. I would dream about playin’ with Muddy as a child. “Nothin’ but a Chicken Wing” is a funky blues tune I wrote. It represents the Chitlin‘ Circuit. “A Better Day” is one of my gospel songs I wrote to pay tribute to the gospel I grew up with. “When I met the Blues”, is a song to represent the hill country blues I love so much. “Baby Please Don’t Go” is a song I have always loved to perform acoustically. “Let me be your Electrician” was my stepfather’s favorite song. “Shame Shame Shame” I wanted to include Jimmy Reed, he is a huge influence. My daughter, Aliya wanted to sing “Lay my Burdens Down”. It’s another tribute to the gospel. “I Ain’t Kickin’ up no Dust” is a song I wrote thinking about walkin’ for miles in dusty MS. The last song, “John’s Crawdad Song” is the first song I learned to play on my didley bow. I hope you enjoy this inspirational album as much as me.”
