Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Chip Taylor has been writing and performing for over 60 years and is back with what might be his final epic album, The Truth And Other Things. The New York Times says it best, “If you only know him as the guy who wrote ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morning” — you don’t know him! Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today.” Last year, music critic Jeff Burger wrote “Taylor, like John Prine, is a national treasure.”
His previous record, Behind The Sky, recalled and described the often harrowing treatments he experienced for throat cancer in 2023. Despite the subject matter, it was “heartening and life-affirming, that Taylor delivered with impressive candor, a lack of self-pity, bravery, and, at times, even a bit of lightness.” The Truth And Other Things comes from a period of remission, with Taylor’s voice in fine form conveying songs that are alternatively optimistic, reflective and philosophical.
The Truth And Other Things is a sprawling 25 songs over 3 discs, recalling his cult classic Little Prayers Trilogy from 10 years ago (9/10 - Uncut Magazine). Taylor assembled his band, guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison), drummer Tony Leone (Little Feat, Chris Robinson), Goran Grini & Tony Mercadante, and recorded virtually the entire album in a week. Later, superstar pedal guitarist Greg Leisz added his magic to several tracks. The result ranges from classic Americana roots rock to heartfelt ballads to acoustic folk - all with a sense of humor and hard won wisdom. The special 3rd disc honors Chuck Flood, a longtime friend in the music business who died in 2023.
Following the recording of this album, Taylor has had to return to cancer treatments with an uncertain prognosis. He is hoping that another remission will allow him to tour in 2025 and reconnect with fans.
