Chad Rupp and the Sugar Roots are back with Gate C23, their third album in as many years. The previous releases, 2022’s Savage’s Life and 2023’s The Devil Won’t Get You received rave reviews from all over the world. This year’s album continues the tradition of excellence they have firmly established, and also features another round of guest appearances from top Pacific Northwest talent.
The Portland, Oregon group includes some of the brightest lights of the formidable Oregon blues scene on this album, including the three- vocal powerhouse of LaRhonda Steele, Arietta Ward, and Ms. Vee. The title track of the album, “Gate C23”, tells the autobiographical story of Chad’s adventures while being laid over in Dallas Fort Worth airport while enroute to Memphis, TN to attend the ‘24 Blues Foundations International Blues Challenge. Due to an ice storm, all flights were cancelled and he spent a frigid night in the airport. In the end, he was saved by a concierge named Karla to whom this song is written about and dedicated
