Jimmy Burns, Jimmy Dawkins, Eddie ‘The Chief’ Clearwater, Paul deLay, Tail Dragger en niet te vergeten onze eigen Peter Struijk zijn artiesten met wie hij het podium deelde en op wiens albums hij te horen is.....

Als soloartiest brengt hij sinds 1997 platen uit via o.m. Delmark en een aantal andere labels. Sinds 2019 heeft hij het ‘Rockin’ voor zijn naam laten vallen. 

Onlangs verscheen van hem bij Straight Shooter Records het nieuwe album “Rockin’ From Coast To Coast” met twaalf nummers, die stevig geënt zijn in de allerbeste Chicagobluestraditie. Het album is in vier verschillende studio’s - Memphis, Dallas, Rochester en Cincinnati – opgenomen met lokale muzikanten. In totaal doen er twintig mee en de lijst leest als een who’s who van huidige topmuzikanten uit de genoemde plaatsen. We zien bv. zangers John Blues Boyd en Rae Gordon, pianist Ben Levin, guitarist Dylan Bishop and Jad Tarij om er maar een paar te noemen. 

Het mixen en de techniek was in de vaardige handen van Kid Andersen. Van de twaalf nummers zijn er tien door Johnny zelf geschreven. Met de opener, het titelnummer “Ramblin’ From Coast To Coast”, een vlotte bluesshuffle, weet hij meteen de aandacht van de luisteraar te grijpen. En met een variatie aan stijlen weet hij de aandacht vast te houden tot aan het mooie “Never Tried To Get Ahead”. Nummers die een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn verder te slowblues “Gettin’ My Blues On” en “Fresno Woman”, een pianoboogie met Hanna PK op de toetsen. 

Met een keur aan begeleiders heeft Burgin opnieuw bewezen tot de absolute top te horen. Ook dit album is een absolute aanrader voor fans van goede Chicagoblues.

Once known as Rockin’ Johnny Burgin, this guitarist has made a name for himself as an accompanist for countless blues artists in addition to an impressive solo career. Jimmy Burns, Jimmy Dawkins, Eddie ‘The Chief’ Clearwater, Paul deLay, Tail Dragger and, not to forget, our own Peter Struijk are artists with whom he shared the stage and on whose albums he can be heard. As a solo artist, he has released records since 1997 via Delmark and a number of other labels. Since 2019, he has dropped the ‘Rockin’ in front of his name. His new album “Rockin’ From Coast To Coast” was recently released on Straight Shooter Records, with twelve songs that are firmly rooted in the very best Chicago blues tradition. The album was recorded in four different studios – Memphis, Dallas, Rochester and Cincinnati – with local musicians. A total of twenty participated and the list reads like a who’s who of current top musicians from the places mentioned. For example, we see singers John Blues Boyd and Rae Gordon, pianist Ben Levin, guitarist Dylan Bishop and Jad Tarij to name a few. The mixing and the technique were in the skilled hands of Kid Andersen. Of the twelve songs, ten were written by Johnny himself. With the opener, the title song "Ramblin' From Coast To Coast", a smooth blues shuffle, he immediately knows how to grab the attention of the listener. And with a variation of styles he knows how to hold the attention until the beautiful "Never Tried To Get Ahead". Songs that deserve a special mention are the slow blues "Gettin' My Blues On" and "Fresno Woman", a piano boogie with Hanna PK on the keys. With a variety of accompanists, Burgin has once again proven to belong to the absolute top. This album is also an absolute must for fans of good Chicago blues.
