Taj Mahal en Etta James functioneerden zo’n beetje als haar mentoren, wat vooral te horen is aan haar zangstijl, die sterk is beïnvloed door Etta. Zij vertrok naar Californië om te studeren en leende haar stem als achtergrondzangeres bij diverse bands, ook is zij te horen in diverse tv-reclamespots. Met haar man Ric W. Ryder keerde zij terug naar de blues en haar eerste album “Might Just Get Lucky” verscheen in 2013.
Inmiddels heeft zij vijf studioalbums uitgebracht en is onlangs haar eerste liveplaat verschenen, getiteld “Live And Havin’ Fun”. Het is opgenomen in The Mint in Los Angeles. De twaalf nummers erop zijn van de hand van Deb en haar man Ric, die ook de productie in handen had. Het echtpaar had een prima band bij zich met onder meer Johnny Lee Schell (gitaar), Tony Braunagel (drums) en Tex Nakamura (harmonica). Op drie nummers speelt de Britse gitaarlegende Albert Lee mee. Het album gaat vlot en opwekkend van start met “Fun Never Hurt No One”. Een lekker swingend nummer, dat wordt gevolgd door het bluesnummer “Enjoy The Ride” en “Temporary Insanity”, het eerste nummer waar Albert Lee op te horen is. Met een fraaie combinatie van blues en rock leidt de band de luisteraar door een mooie liveregistratie. Nummers die wat mij betreft een bijzondere vermelding verdienen zijn het gedeeltelijk in het Frans gezongen “Ma Misere” en het funky “Get Ready”.
Een puntje van kritiek is wel dat het publiek – het is een livealbum! – toch wat te veel op de achtergrond, het klinkt allemaal wat te veel ingeblikt. Iets meer aanwezigheid van het publiek had wat mij betreft wel gemogen. Verder een prima album, goed en duidelijk met plezier uitgevoerd.

After five studio albums, the first live CD of American singer Deb Ryder was recently released. Her mother and stepfather had a club in Chicago, where artists such as Canned Heat, the Eagles, Neil Young, Big Joe Turner, Taj Mahal and Etta James performed. So she was brought up with music. Taj Mahal and Etta James were more or less her mentors, which is especially noticeable in her singing style, which is strongly influenced by Etta. She left for California to study and lent her voice as a background singer to various bands, and she can also be heard in various TV commercials. With her husband Ric W. Ryder, she returned to the blues and her first album “Might Just Get Lucky” was released in 2013.

The album starts off smoothly and upliftingly with “Fun Never Hurt No One”. A nice swinging song, which is followed by the blues song “Enjoy The Ride” and “Temporary Insanity”, the first song on which Albert Lee can be heard. With a beautiful combination of blues and rock, the band leads the listener through a beautiful live recording. Songs that deserve a special mention in my opinion are “Ma Misere”, which is partly sung in French, and the funky “Get Ready”.
One point of criticism is that the audience – it is a live album! – is a bit too much in the background, it all sounds a bit too canned. A bit more presence from the audience would have been nice in my opinion. Furthermore, a great album, well and clearly performed with pleasure.
