Portland, Oregon, rising star Chad Rupp returns with third album in as many years
Portland, Oregon, has produced a nearly endless stream of brilliant blues artists, and Chad Rupp has wasted no time taking a place at the top of the list. This fall marks his third release in three years. The title track of the 11-song album Gate C23 tells the autobiographical story of Chad’s adventures while being laid over in Dallas Fort Worth airport while en route to Memphis to attend the 2024 Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge. Due to an ice storm, all flights were canceled, and he spent a frigid night in the airport. In the end, he was saved by a concierge named Karla, about whom this song is written and to whom it is dedicated.
The highly acclaimed 2023 release The Devil Won't Get You was full of references to--and paid tribute to--the deep blues history found in Memphis and surrounding areas. The album featured performances by some of Portland's most iconic blues musicians. The rhythm section of Timmer Blakely and Jimi Bott provided a strong foundation. Vocal appearances on the album included Lloyd Jones, Johnny Wheels, and Valyria Arnold. Scott Franklin and Joe Mak-McCarthy covered horn duties and brought the grease.
The 2022 debut release Savage's Life featured 10 original songs composed by Chad and the Band and one cover, a second-line version of Steve Miller's "Rock'n Me." Both "Rock'n Me" and the title track "Savage's Life" featured guest vocal appearances by Pacific Northwest stars Rae Gordon, Melanie Owen, Lisa Mann, and Karen Lovely. The funky blues tune "Rain Checkin'" also featured an appearance from Portland legend Lloyd Jones. The Atlas Horns featured on many Lloyd Jones albums also appeared on five of "Savage's Life" tracks.
