Having already featured in Dazed in their ‘Five creatives disrupting archaic female archetypes’ feature in September last year, creativity pours from CHERISE, and she puts equal hard work and dedication into all aspects of her multifaceted career; music, fashion, yoga, teaching, acting. One of her first ever projects was a “musical adventure” which was showcased at London Jazz Festival - ‘Evelyn and the Yellow Birds’ - a tribute to her Grandma, Evelyn, who came to London as part of the Windrush generation, and earned Cherise plaudits with the BBC. Cherise’s culture and heritage sing from her entire creative output “My grandparents taught me that I am a manifestation of their wildest dreams. The gratitude and love I have for them runs through everything I sing” she comments.
In 2022, CHERISE was chosen to open for Michael Kiwanuka at L’Olympia, Paris and Colisée de Roubaix in Lille and Jamie Cullum for his Spring / Summer European tour, she also toured across Europe with Nubiyan Twist. Her cover of Norah Jones classic ‘Sunrise’ is featured on the 2022 ‘Blue:Note Reimagined II’ on Decca Records featuring artists including SWINDLE, Theon Cross and Conor Albert. Other collaborations include Gregory Porter, Steam Down, Rueban James and Omar.
All of this hasn’t gone unnoticed in the fashion world either and CHERISE was invited to work with the chic Parisian label, Sézane - watch the session here.
A classically trained Jazz musician, she attended Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, London, where she was the only black Jazz singer. Previous to this, she attended free Saturday classes at Tomorrow’s Warriors, whose pioneering Young Artist Development Programme primarily supports the early careers of young musicians, with a focus on black and female musicians, and those whose financial or other circumstances might lock them out of opportunities to pursue a career in the music industry. She is now considered one of the elite alumni, a list that includes Moses Boyd, Nubya Garcia, Cassie Kinoshi and Nérija, Femi Koleoso and Ezra Collective, Binker Golding, Shabaka Hutchings and Sons Of Kemet, Eska, Denys Baptiste, Soweto Kinch and Zara McFarlane.
A truly multi-faceted artist, CHERISE is fast proving herself to be one of the most fiercely talented young musicians in the UK. Her effortless, irresistible vocals, alongside her honest, soulful song writing manage to be simultaneously both contemporary and timeless. With Love Supreme, Cross The Tracks and We Out Here festivals already confirmed for this summer and her debut album coming in July - 2023 is looking like a stand out year for our Soul Girl, CHERISE.
