De band is in 2015 opgericht door Jessie Lee en gitarist Alexis ‘Mr. Al’ Didier. Bassist Laurent Cokelaere, drummer Stéphane Miñana-Ripoll, die de eerste drummer Julien Audigier heeft vervangen, en toetsenist Laurian Daire completeren het kwintet. Het zijn stuk voor stuk ervaren muzikanten met een respectabele staat van dienst. Naast het spelen in deze band zijn Jessie Lee en Alex bijvoorbeeld leraar op de ATLA, het conservatorium, in Parijs. De band won vijf prijzen op de Mississipi Blues Trail Challenge in 2018 en wonnen een jaar later de France Blues Challenge. Hun eerste zelfgetitelde album verscheen in 2018, drie jaar later gevolgd door “Let It Shine”.
Op hun eerste album, dat eenvoudigweg “Jessie Lee And The Alchemists” is getiteld, staan elf nummers, waarvan tien composities van Alexis Didier. Negen ervan samen met Charlotte Bizot en één met Jessie Lee. De enige cover is Robert Johnsons “Come On In My Kitchen”. Het geheel staat al seen huis, waarbij het stevige fundament wordt gevormd door bas en drums, waarop de anderen het geheel verder afbouwen. Jessie heeft een aangenaam en stevig stemgeluid, krachtig en soulvol, en is daarbij een uitstekende gitariste. En Alexis is op gitaar gewoon virtuoos te noemen. De nummers zijn uitstekend gecomponeerd en het geheel biedt voldoende variatie om van begin tot eind interessant te blijven. Duidelijk gitaar gedreven rock en bluesrock met uitstapjes naar soul en jazz. Vanaf de opener “Anyhow” zit het tempo erin en dat wordt tot de laatste tonen van “In The Name Of…” niet meer losgelaten. Mijn favoriete nummers zijn de prachtige ballad “I Want You To Stay” en het droevige “Still In The Desert”. Een uitstekend debuutalbum.
In 2021 verscheen het tweede album “Let It Shine”. Stéphane Miñana-Ripoll had toen de plaats achter het drumstel overgenomen van Julien Audigier. In de studio kreeg de band ondersteuning van Amalya Delepierre en Eva Suissa (achtergrondzang), Sylvain “Sly” Fetis (sax) en Vincent Payen (trompet). De toevoeging van hen zorgt dat het geluid vooral nog wat soulvoller is dan op het eerste album. Van de tien nummers zijn er negen geschreven door Alexis en een door Jessie. Ook dit album staat weer als een huis. Duidelijk hoorbaar is dat de band zich verder heeft ontwikkeld en de nummers zowel muzikaal als tekstueel uit meerdere lagen bestaan. En de composities zijn persoonlijker. Luister bijvoorbeeld maar naar het indrukwekkende “Sometimes”, een nummer dat gaat over iemand die lijdt aan paniekaanvallen, de ‘stranger’ waarvan zij zich afvraagt hoe lang die haar nog blijft tergen. Niet alleen blijkt dit uit de tekst, ook de muziek is afwisselend rauw en mooi, agressief en lieflijk. Een schitterend voorbeeld van de potentie van deze band. Een ander hoogtepunt is de mooie bluesballad “One Only Thing”, waarin band en vooral Jessie en Alexis hun topklasse laten zien.
Zowel live als op de plaat toont Jessie Lee and the Alchemists bij de absolute top te behoren en zij kunnen ‘grote’ namen zoals de Tedeschi Trucks Band of Beth Hart recht in de ogen kijken.

After the spectacular performance of the French blues rock formation Jessie Lee and the Alchemists during the Bluezy Blues festival on April 1, I got into a conversation with the charming singer/guitarist Jesse Lee Houllier and decided to pay some attention to this band and the two albums they have since released.
The band was founded in 2015 by Jessie Lee and guitarist Alexis 'Mr. Al' Didier. Bassist Laurent Cokelaere, drummer Stéphane Miñana-Ripoll, who replaced the first drummer Julien Audigier, and keyboardist Laurian Daire complete the quintet. They are all experienced musicians with a respectable track record. For example, besides playing in this band, Jessie Lee and Alex are teachers at the ATLA, the conservatory, in Paris. The band won five awards at the Mississipi Blues Trail Challenge in 2018 and won the France Blues Challenge a year later. Their first self-titled album was released in 2018, followed three years later by “Let It Shine”.
Their first album, simply titled “Jessie Lee And The Alchemists,” features eleven tracks, ten of which are Alexis Didier compositions. Nine of them with Charlotte Bizot and one with Jessie Lee. The only cover is Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen". The whole stands like a house, where the solid foundation is formed by bass and drums, on which the others build the rest. Jessie has a pleasant and firm voice, powerful and soulful, and is an excellent guitarist. And Alexis can simply be called virtuoso on guitar. The songs are excellently composed and the whole offers enough variation to keep it interesting from start to finish. Clearly guitar-driven rock and blues rock with forays into soul and jazz. From the opener “Anyhow” the pace is there and that is not let go until the last tones of “In The Name Of…”. My favorite songs are the beautiful ballad “I Want You To Stay” and the sad “Still In The Desert”. An excellent debut album.
The second album “Let It Shine” will be released in 2021. Stéphane Miñana-Ripoll had then taken over the seat behind the drums from Julien Audigier. In the studio, the band is supported by Amalya Delepierre and Eva Suissa (backing vocals), Sylvain “Sly” Fetis (sax) and Vincent Payen (trumpet). The addition of them ensures that the sound is even more soulful than on the first album. Of the ten songs, nine were written by Alexis and one by Jessie. This album is also rock solid again. It is clearly audible that the band has developed further and the songs consist of several layers, both musically and lyrically. And the compositions are more personal. For example, listen to the impressive “Sometimes”, a song about someone suffering from panic attacks, the “stranger” who she wonders how much longer will continue to provoke her. This is not only apparent from the lyrics, the music is also alternately raw and beautiful, aggressive and lovely. A wonderful example of the potential of this band. Another highlight is the beautiful blues ballad “One Only Thing”, in which the band and especially Jessie and Alexis show their top class.
Both live and on record, Jessie Lee and the Alchemists show that they belong to the absolute top and they can look 'big' names like the Tedeschi Trucks Band or Beth Hart straight in the eye.
