The album opens with “More Than I Do,” a sweet swinging nostalgic love song with soaring background vocals from Kiki Wow and Amber Guzman accented by hot lead guitar. “Blues Magic” follows with tones reminiscent of Santana on a pop-infused tome to a lover and a muse. “Big Fish” is a swampy slinky tale of an elusive treasure that remains just out of reach no matter how hard the man tries. The rowdy blues shuffle with screaming guitar, “Blues Before Sunrise,” originally recorded on piano by Leroy Carr in the late 1920’s, where Wilson works the tried-andtrue convention of a blues man declaring he’s going to hit the road after being done wrong to perfection. “Sunshine Of Your Love,” is a little self-indulgent fun with a big nod to one of the ultimate guitar heroes of all time, Eric Clapton. Producer Francis Buckley lent Wilson the jumping blues “When You Get To My House,” from his own catalog of songs as a vehicle for hot horn jabs and more big gritty lead playing.
Wilson digs deep on the modern slow blues “I’m Still Breathing,” channeling Gary Moore’s Irish soul with stirring conviction. The rockin’ “Goin’ Fishin’ In The Rain,” is a straight-ahead road song with midwestern sensibilities one might find in a Bob Seger or Tom Petty catalog. Wilson and the crew drop in some high-powered nitro fuel on the Muddy Waters’ 1954 blues classic “I’m Ready,” blasting the well-loved standard into the new century. Wilson shows off his versatility nailing the hot licks on the west coast swing number “Black Coffee At Sunrise” that burns along at 220 bpm.
The road song, “Rollin’ Thunder,” pays tribute to the life on the road with a traveling band. Wilson recalls a magic night of dancing and celebration going “Down To The Twist and Shout,” for a Cajun party. Bassist and singer Deb Jacobs, who leads her own blues trio in the Netherlands joins Wilson on the duet “Words I Want To Say To You,” a sophisticated composition with a timeless feel of two hearts reveling in the power of love.
The album ends with a bonus live version of “Slide On Over,” first heard on his 2013 album Hands On The Wheel delivered raw with all its Robin Trower meets Hendrix bravado - Power Blues Guitar for sure. Rick J Bowen
