Hoewel Jim Kahr al een aantal prima eigen albums heeft uitgebracht is hij vooral bekend als begeleider van een veelal aan bluesartiesten. De in 1952 in Chicago geboren Kahr was begin zeventiger jaren begeleider van Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland voordat hij ging samenspelen met Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor en Jimmy Rogers, om er maar een paar te noemen. John Lee Hooker en Freddie King namen hem zelfs op in zijn band.

Onlangs verscheen zijn nieuwe plaat getiteld “Back To The Roots” met daarop veertien nummers, waarvan er dertien door Kahr zelf zijn geschreven. De enige cover is het live opgenomen “Breakin’ Up Somebody’s Home”. Begeleid wordt hij door drummer Steve Potts, bassist Dave Smith, toetsenist Ernest Williamson en saxofonist Andrew Love, terwijl de achtergrondzang wordt verzorgd door Reba Russell en Jackie Johnson. Het resultaat is een zeer fraai en gevarieerd album geworden, waarin de Chicagoblues duidelijk de stevige basis vormt en het aanbod uiteenloopt van ballads, uptempo stukken en ook funky werk. De titel van het album “Back To The Roots” slaat niet zozeer op Kahrs muzikale roots, maar die van zijn voorouders. Die komen namelijk uit het plaatsje Oberwart in Oostenrijk en verhuisden in 1910 naar Chicago. Het album wordt uitgebracht door het Oostenrijkse Alessa label. De cirkel is gesloten. Nummers die wat mij betreft een speciale vermelding verdienen zijn het vlotte “Better Days Are Comin’”, de slowblues “Got To Be Away” en het funky “Landin’ On You”. Een heerlijk album met ouderwets klinkende Chicagoblues. Aanrader.

Although Jim Kahr has already released a number of excellent albums, he is best known as an accompanist for a lot of blues artists. Born in Chicago in 1952, Kahr accompanied Bobby "Blue" Bland in the early 1970s before joining Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and Jimmy Rogers, to name a few. John Lee Hooker and Freddie King even included him in his band.

Recently his new record entitled “Back To The Roots” was released with fourteen songs, thirteen of which were written by Kahr himself. The only cover is the live recorded "Breakin' Up Somebody's Home". He is accompanied by drummer Steve Potts, bassist Dave Smith, keyboardist Ernest Williamson and saxophonist Andrew Love, while backing vocals are provided by Reba Russell and Jackie Johnson. The result has become a very beautiful and varied album, in which the Chicago blues is clearly the strong base and the range varies from ballads, uptempo pieces and also funky work. The title of the album “Back To The Roots” refers not so much to Kahr's musical roots, but to those of his ancestors. They come from the town of Oberwart in Austria and moved to Chicago in 1910. The album is released by the Austrian Alessa label. The circle is closed. Songs that deserve a special mention as far as I'm concerned are the smooth "Better Days Are Comin'", the slow blues "Got To Be Away" and the funky "Landin' On You". A wonderful album with old-fashioned sounding Chicago blues. Recommended.
