Joshua Hyslop - Westward
Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Joshua Hyslop is excited to announce his 5th full-length album, Westward, which will be released on April 22, 2022 via Nettwerk.
While writing the new record, Josh dealt with bouts of anxiety and depression triggered by the convergence of first-time parenthood, the deaths of two friends, and of course, a never-ending pandemic. Writing was a form of release, so Hyslop would jump at the sporadic chances to meet up with long-time producer John Raham to record. The lapse in time between these sessions partially explains why some tracks are alt-country or singer-songwriter in style while others explore Appalachian sounds or evoke Irish dirges and American gospel. He explains, “This collection of songs was a stretch for me. I wanted to try my hand at some different styles while still staying true to my voice. Getting to work with John again was a pleasure and was definitely a part of what helped me achieve that goal."

Recently, he shared his new single “More Than This”. "This song came to me in a rare moment of unflinching self-reflection," says Joshua Hyslop. "Vulnerability can be hard, especially with ourselves, but I wanted to try to dig as deep as I could, putting as much under the microscope as possible. The result was a hard look at all the success and failure I've had, both in my career and in my personal life, and the tiny, easy-to-lose, thin thread of hope that underlines it all." The warm tune builds layers on a folk backbone to an uplifting anthem.
Westward is the latest body of work in his extensive catalog that includes his past full-length albums: Ash & Stone [2020], Where The Mountain Meets the Valley [2012], In Deepest Blue [2015], and Echos [2018]. Hyslop has accumulated over 293 Million streams worldwide and has carved out an impressive diehard fan base with praise from the likes of American Songwriter, Earmilk, NPR, Exclaim!, and many more.
Up next, Josh will be returning to Europe in March for a tour supporting Canadian indie-folk band Jon and Roy. See all dates below.
