This Montana-based outfit’s excellent new self-released Gordon Lightfoot tribute album deftly fortifies buoyant
classic rock staples (“ Carefree Highway” ) with deep cuts (“ Sometimes I Wish” ).
I was really interested in capturing the classic Seventies sounds that the original records have while recording Heavy on the Lightfoot,” frontman Ian Thomas says. “ I didn't quite get it the way Gordon did, of course, but I still think it sounds good.”

“ I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot, but never performed any ofhis material and was intrigued to start receiving requests for his songs at our shows,” Thomas says. “ These requests turned into a studio project that became this album.”

The Band of Drifters - rotating musicians from across the country lead by singer-songwriter Thomas - includes members Irom as far and wide as Tennessee and Vermont. The baker’s dozen songs on Heavy on the Lightfoot are adapted to the live sound commonly performed by the Band of Drifters, featuring deft fiddle, pedal steel, electric and B-bender guitars over a bed of acoustic guitar, bass and drums.
