The Lasses Sophie Janna solo debuut single track Nightfall

The Lasses Sophie Janna solo debuut single track Nightfall download 9 juli 2021

Bio:

Short bio Sophie Janna (English)
Sophie Janna fell in love with traditional folk music in Edinburgh and took that love back
with her to hometown Amsterdam. Old songs were more soothing to her than her own
songs ever could be; you can lose yourself in someone else’s story. But now Sophie is finally
releasing some of her own songs, in hopes that other people might find comfort in them
too. As a songwriter she is very much inspired by the Scottish and Irish folk traditions, as
well as by contemporary artists like The Weather Station, Joan Shelley and Sylvan Esso.
This is what Sophie says about ‘Wide World’:
“This song is about not daring to tell someone that you love them. I've always been scared
to express how I feel and I've spent most of my life so far pretending to be stronger and
more independent than I really am. Only in music I dare to show my emotions. With this
song I tried to tell someone what I didn't dare to say out loud: that I wanted them to stay
with me, preferably forever, and not to go home to their own country.”
Last summer, the song got its wings when, due to closing borders, Sophie ended up in a
house in Paris with her friends Niko and Jakes, who form label and recording studio
Upcycled Sounds together. Jakes made a beautiful arrangement for the song, adding hums
and a soundscape. The song was released on Revanche Records on April 23.
Long bio Sophie Janna
Sophie Janna plays folk with a pulse: strong, soothing songs that tell a story, paired with
driving rhythms on guitar or bodhrán. Her sound is reminiscent of that of folk artists like
Joan Shelley, Karine Polwart and Ane Brun.
Sophie's natural singing style and her clear tone reveal that she was born into a family of
singers. But she truly found her own voice when she lived in Edinburgh, where traditional
ballads are still performed in pubs and living rooms, accompanied sparsely by a guitar, a
violin or a softly hummed harmony. Sophie took her love for traditional songs with her to
hometown Amsterdam and kept singing them in the years to come.
In 2013, Sophie met sound engineer and musician Nicholas O'Brien. He invited her to record
an album with him at Upcycled Sounds studio in Paris and Oxford. For that album, Sophie
chose to record eleven of her favourite traditionals: old songs with stories that have been
sung forever because people have always suffered and enjoyed the same things. To lose
yourself in that universal experience helps to put your life in perspective and makes you feel
less alone. It is that feeling that drives Sophie to create music: the hope that someone else
feels less alone by hearing her stories. Her EP ‘Wide World’ will be released in the summer
of 2021, with the title track as the first single.
