Way Down The Alley (Live At Blind Willie’s”).

Only 24 years old and Eddie 9V is already being called an old soul. Not surprising when you listen to him with his Freddie King and Otis Rush-reminiscent guitar style and the lyrics, which show a wide life experience. He left school at 15 and was mainly found in the clubs of his hometown of Atlanta. His debut album “Left My Soul In Memphis” was released in 2019, followed a year later by “Way Down The Alley (Live At Blind Willie's”). And now his third album, “Little Black Flies” has been released.

Together with his brother Lane Kelly, who plays bass on a number of songs, he recorded and produced this album himself. Of the twelve songs, nine are written by the brothers. In addition to Eddie and Lane, we hear experienced musicians such as Cody Matlock (guitar), Chad Mason (keyboards), Jackson Allen (harmonica), Aaron Hambrick (drums), bassists Brandon Boone and Marvin Mahaney. With the first song, the title song “Little Black Flies”, a nice soul-blues, Eddie immediately gives his business card. With a song like “Dog Me Around” the soft edges are removed and the listener is treated to a fierce blues, including howling harmonica. He can also be funky, as he shows in “Miss James”, a cross between Bobby Rush and Johnny Guitar Watson. And a sense of humor is evident, as in "Columbus Zoo Blues", written from the perspective of the animals in the zoo. Other songs that deserve a special mention are the raw blues “Reach Into Your Heart” and “3AM In Chicago” which are about the unequal rights of black people in the US. A more than excellent album. For me Eddie 9V is a true discovery.
