"If you want the story of the Blues People, our spiritual beliefs, vernacular, folklore and
traditional expression trajectory, then listen to Benny Turner’s “Who Sang it First!” It’s
definitely the essence of African American Traditional Music with a sweet Gospel Feel!
Lamont Jack Pearley AKA Jack Dappa Blues
‘Who Sang It First’ is Benny Turner’s adaptation of Jim George’s original song, ‘Black Is Beautiful,’
which George describes as his “tribute to all the black pioneers and artists who have paved the
way, invented the music and enriched all our lives.” In Turner’s version, he pays homage to the
legendary blues musicians who have strongly influenced today’s music. Appropriately, the song
was recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, with veteran session musicians Clayton Ivey on
keys and Will McFarlane on guitar.

LYRICS
In the churches
In the cotton fields
A seed was planted
That forever yields
Soul from heaven
And blues from the earth
Can’t put a price on what it’s worth
My friends it’s clearly undeniable
Those old blues legends
They were so beautiful
You might sing it better
Or you might sing it worse
Just remember who sang it first
Songs that make you laugh
Songs that make you cry
