Listening to a Steven Wilkins album is like catching up with an old friend. It doesn’t lock you into a genre, or remind you of an artist, it reminds you of an era of music. A time where music and lyrics connected with a deep sense of purpose and meaning. Steven Wilkins is a storyteller sharing snapshots of life, and his story continues with the album Waiting.
Perfectly following his 2015 release Thanks For Asking Anyway, Waiting picks up where Thanks For Asking left off. However you get a slight sense of more confidence and focus on the new batch of songs. From the songwriting, through the production and mix, Waiting gives a sense of the process being well thought out and executed. From the melodic laid back approach of the title track ‘Waiting’, sweet romantic sentiments in ‘Chardonnay’, the fun of ‘First Time Feeling’ and ‘Finding Out About You’, the concerns in ‘Mother Nature Crying’, ‘Dark Nights’, and ‘Weight of the World’, through to punchy anthems like ‘Last Chance’ and ‘Been Down That Road Before’, these songs highlight every day life in their content, and delivered in a way that feels like you’ve known these songs your whole life. Another highlight is in the cover version of the iconic “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Steven’s rendition shows respect and class in it’s approach, while making the song his own.
