A standout track from his latest album, Black and Blue: The Brick Hill Sessions, “American Rose” tells the timeless story of a young woman chasing stardom across the American landscape. “‘American Rose’ was written a few years back, and I had previously recorded it several times in different keys and arrangements,” says Fignus. “But this version—thanks to the incredible guidance and mixing work of engineer/producer Jon Evans—was where it all finally came together. The song found its soul.”
Jon Evans, known for his work with Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, and Linda Perry, helped sculpt the sonic landscape of the track at Cape Cod’s renowned Brick Hill Studio, where the Black and Blue sessions were recorded over a six-year period. The accompanying music video is a visual triumph in its own right—crafted by award-winning cinematographer Luis Aria, who previously collaborated with Digney on the now-iconic video for “The Girl with the Curious Hand.” That video, which won MTV’s Basement Tapes competition in the 1980s, catapulted Fignus into national prominence and led to a major label deal with Columbia Records.
“Luis and I go way back,” says Fignus. “To reunite with him after all these years was a joy. He has an unmatched eye for emotion, for story. He took the feeling behind the song and made it bloom on screen.”
In “American Rose,” Fignus continues to prove why he remains one of New England’s most enduring and vital songwriters. Blending roots rock, folk-pop, and lyrical soul, the track is equal parts nostalgic and fresh—grounded in the past but reaching for something eternal.
