Garry spent his teens and twenties as the protégé, longtime bass player and occasional guitarist for neighboring Mississippi Blues legend, Junior Kimbrough, with whom he played all over the country, including tours opening for Iggy Pop and Kid Rock. Garry played on all of Junior Kimbrough’s critically-acclaimed Fat Possum recordings and, following Kimbrough’s death in 1998, began playing and recording regularly with the North Mississippi Allstars, the Hill Country Revue (a NMA side project for whom he wrote almost their entire debut album), brother Duwayne Burnside (for whom he ghostwrote most of the album, Under Pressure), and Grammy-award-winning nephew Cedric
Burnside (with whom Garry received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration, Descendents of Hill Country). Garry has also recorded with blues greats Jesse Mae Hemphill and Bobby Rush, and many others.

No longer just a sideman, Garry is a phenomenal guitarist and excellent singersongwriter, who now fronts his own band on guitar and vocals (with bass, drums, and keyboard accompaniment) and plays regularly at various clubs and festivals throughout the South. Garry has recently recorded an outstanding album, his solo commercial debut, It’s My Time Now, at legendary Royal Studios in Memphis with Grammy-awardwinning producer Boo Mitchell, son of the legendary Hi Records/Al Green producer, Willie Mitchell.
An impressive mix of Hill Country blues and blues-rock, It’s My Time Now, is a tribute to Garry’s mentors, RL, and Junior, as well as his own declaration of independence after decades as a sideman. Featuring nine fine Garry Burnside original compositions, one co-write with Junior Kimbrough (“Ramblin’”), and one classic R.L. Burnside cover (“Bad Luck City”), the album quickly establishes a unique, identifiable, individual style which features interesting rhythms and changes, frequent use of a unison vocal/guitar style common to jazz (like a grittier, rockier George Benson), and lots and lots of great, great blues and blues-rock guitar. The highlights are many, including the title track, “Young Country Boy” and “Ramblin’” (a couple of scorchers), and all three instrumental tracks (“High,” “AGF Out” and the incredible mood-setter, “Bad Luck City”).
Garry describes his music as “Hill Country with a lil bit of funk” and, about the album, says “I spent most of my career playing bass or guitar with other bands, so it feels amazing to say this will be my first album being released with all of my own music on it. Coming up under my pops [R.L. Burnside] and Junior Kimbrough, I learned so much. This album really is a testament to them, what they taught me, and my growth as a musician. I hope it makes them proud.”
With the impending release of his solo debut, Garry is eagerly looking forward to expanding his audience and touring circle.
