De uit Pittsburgh, PA, afkomstige Pierce Dipner is een nog piepjonge bluesman en multi-instrumentalist. Als achtjarige begon hij met gitaar spelen, op zijn negen speelde hij ook bas, drums en cello. Toen hij elf jaar oud was ontdekte hij de blues en op zijn dertiende trad hij al op tijdens de 2017 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, waar hij twee jaar later weer voor werd gevraagd. In 2018 vormde hij zijn eerste band, Pierce Dipner and the Shades of Blue, waarmee hij zijn eerste EP uitbracht.
En nu, 18 jaar oud, is zijn eerste volwaardige album uitgekomen met als titel “Goin’ Back”. Hierop staan tien nummers, waarvan er zeven door Dipner zijn geschreven. Het vertolken van andermans nummers is één ding, maar uit de zeven zelfgeschreven nummers blijkt dat we hier te maken hebben met een zeer getalenteerde jonge bluesmuzikant. De nummers zijn goed geschreven en worden heel goed uitgevoerd. Nu had hij uitstekende sessiemuzikanten tot zijn beschikking, maar de basis – prima nummers – komen toch van zijn eigen hand. Nummers die wat mij betreft opvallen zijn de ballad “Tore Us Apart” en het titel nummer “Goin’ Back”. Prima album, we gaan nog veel horen van Pierce Dipner.

Pierce Dipner, from Pittsburgh, PA, is a very young bluesman and multi-instrumentalist. He started playing guitar at the age of eight, and at nine he also played bass, drums and cello. And now, 18 years old, his first full-fledged album has been released entitled “Goin' Back”. It contains ten songs, seven of which are written by Dipner. Interpreting other people's songs is one thing, but the seven self-written songs show that we are dealing with a very talented young blues musician. The songs are well written and very well performed. Now he had excellent session musicians at his disposal, but the basics – good songs – still come from his own hand. Songs that stand out to me are the ballad “Tore Us Apart” and the title track “Goin' Back”. Great album, we're going to hear a lot more from Pierce Dipner.
