Heywood & Moore Single: ‘Tumbleweed’
Country music is supposed to be all about “three chords and the truth” and Dawn’s song Tumbleweed is just that, a deeply personal confession. It explores the reluctance that we have to let go of a long-term relationship. Specifically, a relationship into which we had invested our soul, energy, drive, spirit and life and the heart-breaking acceptance that it had evolved into a prison, becoming a bed of lies with no apparent escape.
The new song, which is the first Heywood & Moore track for a little while, speaks of the lengths that we go to hide, both from ourselves and from others, the truth about a relationship that is falling apart. That the love, shared dreams and future plans are redundant and the excuses we make and the reasons we give to maintain the illusion of happiness.
The lyrics spell out the tragic optimism of trying to keep a dying relationship alive at the expense of our true selves which we know, but can barely admit, is ultimately doomed. Love, turning first to despair and then to hatred, both of your partner and yourself, for allowing and facilitating this loss of self and self-worth.
Ultimately, Tumbleweed is a record of the despair of living in a relationship without hope whilst maintaining the pipe dream that somehow it can be saved.
